@localworksug ⚡ What makes EcoPrefab so impactful? ⚡
EcoPrefab combines innovative material technologies with environmentally responsive architecture to bring dignity to local craftsmanship. This do-it-together effort showcases why designers should work closely with material fabricators.

EcoPrefab uses pigmented lime plaster – a natural, breathable finish made with lime & pigments. It replaces cementitious plaster that traps moisture & chemical paints that are toxic, costly and short-lived. Durable, low-carbon & healthy - performance and character in one finish.

In EcoPrefab classrooms, the blackboard wall does more than hold chalk. A narrow skylight, made of clear sheet, above lets in soft light enough to radiate the front of the room without glare.
Lighting design doesn’t always need wires.

Empowering the construction sector to drive Air Quality Action in Uganda
One of our main aims for the #KampalaBreathes Campaign is to widen the base of Air quality ambassadors, in line with this we had a beautiful presentation on raising air quality awareness to the visionary team at @localworksug !
Our discussion was a profound reminder that when advocacy meets innovation, a powerful force for change is born. The synergy between our campaign's mission and their groundbreaking work is undeniable. We delved into the crucial role of construction in the air quality crisis & public health plus solutions .
The most amazing discovery after the presentation was the "Ecoprefab" initiative by Localworks. This green and scalable model for schools in East Africa is a powerful response to the climate crisis. By reducing CO2 emissions by about 75% compared to conventional methods, they are setting a new standard for responsible construction and showing the world what's possible. Localworks isn't just building structures, they're crafting a healthier future.
Solutions to better air quality are directly woven into the fabric of their design choices. In our presentation, we highlighted solutions that can improve both indoor and outdoor air quality, and Localworks is and has already implemented some of these ;
1. Using Low-VOC Materials: They utilize natural materials like pigmented lime plaster and pressed saw-dust-lime blocks which have minimal Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, ensuring the air inside their buildings is as clean as possible for students and teachers.
2. Designing for Natural Airflow: Their innovative designs incorporate features like covered walkways and open-air teaching spaces, strategically promoting a constant flow of fresh air and natural ventilation, reducing the reliance on energy-intensive systems.
3. Embracing Biophilic Design: By seamlessly integrating natural elements like eucalyptus trusses and stone, they are building spaces that connect occupants to the natural world, which is proven to improve overall health and well-being.
This is a powerful example of what can be achieved when innovation, sustainability, and human health are prioritized. Rarely do we meet companies at the forefront of climate action and good air quality.
To championing a healthier, more sustainable future for all of Uganda through campaigns like #KampalaBreathes!
Thank you to the entire Localworks team for your inspiring work .
