BREAKING: Member of New York’s rental board resigns, decrying political “theater”

Hours before the Rent Guidelines Board was set to make a final vote on a potential rent freeze for rent-stabilized units in NYC, Christina Smyth, the board’s lone landlord representative, resigned.

Smyth said she believed the outcome of the vote had already been decided before the process was complete.

She asserted that the board’s hearings, data, and public comments were merely “theater,” and that the majority ignored evidence of rising operating, insurance, and property tax costs faced by landlords, instead moving toward a rent freeze for political reasons.
