Copyright has changed throughout the years and is still evolving, especially with new technology and platforms being developed almost on a daily basis. After 50 years of business, Bridgeman Images has become the world's leading specialists in licensing fine art, cultural and historical media for reproduction.  

The business was started in order for easier access to illustrations of works of art. In 1972 there was no central and convenient way to obtain colour transparencies or b&w prints other than by going to each museum to photograph the art, raising the risk of damage to the pigments in artworks caused by the camera flash but also by excessive handling. Bridgeman Art Library's main focus was to allow users access to thousands of images and at the same time providing extra income for the museums, collections, artists and institutions which it represents.

Bridgeman Images, as it's now known, is a global business, located in 5 countries and its archive has grown to over 4m images. Its clients continue to use Bridgeman Images, not only for its breadth and depth of available, quality content files (both in and out of copyright) but also for its expertise and knowledge regarding image research, licensing and image indemnification.

It now works with over 800 museums globally, 400+ private collections and galleries, 125+ photographic agencies, and not to mention 10+ auction houses.  It also represents the copyright for 1500+ contemporary artists and 350+ artist estates. The Bridgeman Images archive contains both in copyright and out-of-copyright images. 

Clients trust Bridgeman Images as they will know the source of a file which is seldom the case when an artwork is found on a web search.
