I care about both our wellbeing as people & the planet. Something tells me if we get it right on both fronts, we'll solve many of the world’s global challenges.
Celebrating 2025 and Launching Our Griots Stories https://t.co/xpKCd8YN1j
"Throughout January, we will publish all talks from the inaugural Griots Conference, spotlighting five fellows across our platforms. This means you will engage with powerful narratives offering unique insights into leadership, innovation, resilience, and community transformation across Africa. Each story represents not just one person's journey but a contribution to our continent's living archive of wisdom."

History will remember Hon. @RailaOdinga for his belief that Kenya could rise higher. His journey of resilience, conviction, and love for our country reminds us that true leadership is service. Kenya stands taller because of him. 🇰🇪 #RestInPeace
@loisemachira's talk traced her evolution from witnessing Kenya's 2007 post-election violence as a powerless teenager to becoming a leader in social justice and climate action.
She recounted how the violence, which killed over 1,100 people and displaced 600,000, planted a question in her mind: "Where are the leaders?" She explained that this drove her to volunteer with the Kenya Red Cross and later study public international law to understand how systems could protect human rights and prevent civil conflict.
She shared that in 2021, she joined a coalition that successfully advocated for Kenya's Mental Health (Amendment) Bill, which recognized therapy as a health service, prohibited insurance discrimination, and established penalties for violations—proving that citizen action could make laws reflect humanity.
Machira described how her leadership journey accelerated during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown when families in Kariobangi North informal settlement were unlawfully evicted. She recounted visiting with limited supplies, sharing one resident's story online with consent, and raising nearly $20,000 within a week through digital activism—eventually supporting over 600 families through a year-long relief project.
She reflected that this experience revealed the power of empathy paired with strategy and clear calls to action. She explained that today, through her organisation Green Energy Nest, she works with clean energy initiatives across Africa to amplify their impact and lead the just energy transition, emphasizing that while Africa holds 60% of the world's solar potential, 600 million people still lack electricity.
She concluded that her central message answers her childhood question: the leaders we've been waiting for are ourselves—"we are the ones" who must refuse to look away, ask uncomfortable questions, and believe that small actions can create big change.

Kenyans, I hope today we will not be overcome with anger. God is urging his people to overcome evil with good. As we protest, let's be firm, BUT speak peace, and be respectful. We can't win this fight if we fight fire with fire. Be sober and be safe. 🙏🏽🇰🇪
