we've hosted 4 distilled human judgment challenges on @PondGNN ever since vitalik wrote "AI as the engine, humans as the steering wheel" back in Feb

David has been a star participant in these contests so i read his writeup with curiosity as the first empirical results on the approach

5 key issues

1/ after a competition ends, the community should be able to recreate the leaderboard without depending on organizers

basically we need a commit-reveal structure to make public any scripts used to generate datasets, ground truth & model scoring

2/ the top 3 models might be good at majority of the data, but a niche submission fitting better with a subset of the data should still be rewarded

any model giving some useful signal should be rewarded using approaches like SHAP, composite model etc . a plurality of models and metrics is more resistant to goodharts law than a few models dominating the leaderboard

3/ which leads directly to the challenge of reducing the incentive to game the system by making multiple submissions

the trick here is not having artificial constraints such as limiting usage of external datasets but only fully enforceable ones

to solve sybil, requiring detailed write-ups of model submissions & ideally having open source code with fully reproducible results by anyone invoking the model

4/ competitions need to reward the people who improve the competition

opening up the design so the community can weigh in & get rewarded for finding bugs in the scoring script, discover data leakage & other issues impacting the validity of the competition

5/ eventually, being able to run such competitions without a central trusted party

The host of the competition should use a committee or other community centric methods to conduct meta analysis on submitted models to detect bias or error and also to give feedback to participants

overall, bringing these competitions fully onchain can address many of the issues

eventually, the hope is to turn the entire structure into a new type of fully onchain DAO that gets powered by AI but has humans steering in the right direction
