There’s another name that is not getting near the attention that it should to be the next HC of Michigan. That name is Biff Poggi.
He is so much more than just a nice guy and a stand in coach. He’s one of the best leaders you will find across any industry. He checks every box when it comes to the principles you’d look for in a head coach.
Consider this, the best leaders tend not to want the position, rather they only want to serve their people. They have no interest in personal gain. No one can truly and genuinely say what Biff can say. That he came to Michigan not for money, nor for fame, not to advance any agenda. Biff genuinely and fully chose to join Michigan out of pure love for the players and because he believes Michigan to be a special place.
That is the exact human characteristic you’d look for in hiring your head coach.
And because of that, the players love and adore Biff. They trust him. They are bought into his message. The staff does too. The community does. The decision makers, whoever they are, should as well.
I believe that this is, or should be, such an important piece of the process at this point.
Biff has the full trust of the major boosters and donors as well. Again his personal history matters here. When Biff goes to raise money for the team, the boosters can trust the intentions to be pure. And they do trust him based on all I know. Another very important piece of this.
What about his ability to put together a staff? Frankly, I’m not so sure Biff wouldn’t be able to put together a staff that would rival any of the mentioned candidates. He has relationships that go coast to coast and cover every aspect of the game of football.
As a high school coach in Baltimore during his time before joining Michigan, he ran one of the top high school programs in America. Every top college coach looked to Biffs roster for talent. That led to friendships being born and relationships being built. We all remember the back and forth Biff to Saban on gameday this year right? Saban is one of many legends that stand behind and support Biff.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Biff would put together a championship level staff immediately.
We all got to see the way the team played under his leadership this year. They are and were bought in.
I guess the point is, this is a very uncertain time for Michigan for a number of different reasons that go beyond answering who the next head coach will be. I think Michigan would be crazy to not give Biff a chance to interview and present his plan, assuming he wants the job and wants that opportunity.
Regardless, and I’ll continue to say it, Michigan is very lucky to have Biff Poggi on their side.
You could search the edges of the earth, but would not find a better person to lead the Michigan football team than Biff Poggi. Biff is not there for $, fame, or personal gain. He is there for the players. The love and trust him. Michigan is beyond lucky to have Biff Poggi
