LATEST — A Hong Kong appeals court has today upheld the 2022 convictions of His Eminence Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, S.D.B., and four fellow trustees of the now-defunct 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund.

The 94-year-old Cardinal, Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong was fined HK$4,000 ($512).

The five were first arrested in 2022 on suspicion of colluding with foreign forces under the national security law, though they were never charged under that statute.

A reminder that the French Revolution was completely evil, a blood sacrifice to the fallen angel, that resulted in mountains of bodies, rivers of blood, and decades of violent attack on Christ's Church.

Jean-Marie du Lau d’Alleman was born on 30 October 1738 at the Château de la Côte in Biras in the Périgord region of France, into a noble family that had already given many of its sons to the Church. After studies at the Collège de Navarre and a degree in theology from the Sorbonne, he rose steadily through ecclesiastical offices, serving as canon, vicar general, and one of the two general agents of the French clergy. In 1775 King Louis XVI named him Archbishop of Arles; at thirty-six he was the youngest prelate the king appointed. He proved a diligent pastor, visiting parishes, restoring discipline, improving liturgical practice, and encouraging catechesis, taking Saint Charles Borromeo as his model. The National Assembly suppressed the ancient see of Arles in 1790, making him its last archbishop.

When the Revolution required clergy to swear the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, an oath that placed the Church under state control, du Lau refused. After the fall of the monarchy in August 1792 he was arrested in Paris and confined with hundreds of other non-juring priests and religious in the former Carmelite convent, the Hôtel des Carmes. There the prisoners organized a life of prayer and mutual support that astonished their guards.

On 2 September 1792 an armed crowd burst into the convent garden during the September Massacres. When the mob called for the Archbishop of Arles, du Lau stepped forward, identified himself, and was struck down with sabres and pikes; his body was trampled. In the same hours two other bishops, François-Joseph de la Rochefoucauld of Beauvais and Pierre-Louis de la Rochefoucauld of Saintes, together with scores of priests, deacons, religious brothers and a few laymen, were killed on the spot or after a summary demand that they take the oath. Most refused and died. The group of 190 victims of those September days, headed by du Lau, was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 17 October 1926. Their memory is kept on 2 September.
