Everyone needs to know how to sell. Most people think it’s hard.

But it isn’t.

I asked my friend “If I were to hire you as my accountant, what would you do for me?”

She went on to say a lot of things. None of which made any sense to me as to why I should pay her…

If she knew a bit of sales this is how she’d have closed me:

Her: Why are you looking for an accountant?

Me: Err, I think I need one. You guys help with taxes and all yeah?

Her: Yeah…and more. But before I know if you need an accountant, what made you think you need one?

Me: Well, because I’m always paying staff from my personal account, receiving money from all accounts. And I think we are getting big enough where I can’t run it the way I am currently

Her: Why tho? What’s wrong with how you’re currently doing it? You seem fine.

Me: well…I mean…I could be better. Plus I’d rather focus on the aspect of the business that I know more of and leave the others to experts.

Her: Okay…and what else?

Me: uhm taxes and filing etc

Her: how are you currently doing that?

Me: Well I just calculate how much I think I’m to pay and pay.

Her: And how much have you been paying?

Me: reveals price.

Her: is that a lot to you?

Me: I wish it could be less and less stressful.

Her: And how long have you been paying these taxes.

Me: 3 years.

Her: if I told you, that with an accountant 3 years ago you could have realistically saved $80k in taxes, what would you say?

Me: No way…are you real?

Her: Yeah. So the question is…how much longer do you want to continue 30% more than you should while being more stressed about it?

Me: if I had known this 3 years ago I’d have done it

Her: You sure? Why didn’t you know it?

Me: I don’t know.

Her: okay…So back to the question. How much longer are you willing to that put that off?

Me: Nah, let’s get started. What do I need to do?

Just honest conversation and a good listener.
