43 years ago today,  Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip officially opened the iconic Humber Bridge. It was a day people would never forget. Vanessa Walker had a front row seat for that historic day. Her mother was Lord Mayor of Hull and had appointed Vanessa as her Lady Mayoress. Vanessa's father was also the first chairman of the Humber Bridge Board.

As part of our Hidden Histories of the Humber Bridge project in 2019, we interviewed Vanessa and she talked about her deep personal connection with the bridge. She also recalls meeting the Royals and how her young daughter handed Her Majesty a bouquet of flowers. The interview is a fascinating insight on that historic day.

Vanessa went on to live a life of public service, working as a nurse, and East Riding councillor as well as cabinet member until she passed away in January 2022.
