$40 an hour used to sound like you made it.
That's over $80,000 a year working full-time.
Today?
Daycare can eat $30,000.
Rent can eat another $25,000.
Then there's taxes, insurance, groceries, gas, healthcare and the car.
Suddenly the person making $40 an hour is asking where all their fucking money went.
We keep talking about wages like it's 2010.
$40 an hour didn't become bad money.
Everything else became insane.
BOOMER: "You'd have a house by now if you stopped buying coffee."
YOU: "Coffee is $5. The down payment is $84,000."
BOOMER: "It adds up."
YOU: "$5 a day is $1,825 a year. It would take me 46 years."
BOOMER: "Then cut the subscriptions too."
YOU: "That's another $600. Now it's 34 years."
BOOMER: "And eating out."
YOU: "Fine. Zero coffee, zero streaming, zero restaurants. 27 years to the down payment. I'd be 70."
BOOMER: "See, you just have to sacrifice."
YOU: "Your house cost 3x your salary. Mine costs 8x. That's the entire gap."
BOOMER: "Don't blame me for your choices."
YOU: "I'm not blaming you. I'm asking you to look at the number."
BOOMER: "You young people just love to complain."
There it is.
Every time. Show them the math, they answer with your character.
Because if it's the coffee, nobody has to feel anything.
A boomer last night tried to brag that they survived on $4.25 an hour back in 1984.
They got real quiet when I pointed out that's the same as $13.60 an hour in today's money.
My boomer dad asked me last week why I'm still renting at 43.
I told him a starter home in our area is $410,000.
He said "so save up."
I said the down payment alone is $82,000.
He said "that's not so bad, break it into pieces."
I said after rent, insurance, and daycare I put away maybe $400 a month.
He did the math out loud. Got to seventeen years. Went quiet.
Then he said something I didn't expect.
"I put down $3,200 on our first place. I had it saved in eight months working at the plant."
Then he just sat there for a second.
"I always thought you kids were exaggerating."
That's it. That's the whole conversation.
He wasn't being cruel. He genuinely had no idea. Nobody ever showed him the number.
Most of them aren't defending the system. They just never looked at it.
