Removing NGT too early after leaving the ICU continues to happen, often without dietetic involvement in the decision - occurs in 58% of cases! #espen2022

I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve presented this & the number of times it’s been tweeted. I can only hope that each time it makes a few more people consider the important role that nutrition plays in recovery from critical illness #SOA22
@danni_dietitian Thank you. Appetite recovery can take up to three months post ICU to recover. Lots for me to learn to support bedside discussions with ICU patients recommencing oral intake to hopefully be more realistic & helpful when pts ask me about their NGT etc
Do not remove the NG tube!
Oral intake alone shows such poor adequacy of meeting nutritional requirements!
We see this so often the tube is removed so early because patients are ‘eating well’, but this is very often not the case. Refer to the dietitian.

Great response from @danni_dietitian regarding a question over the issue of ‘taste of nutritional supplements’
- remember taste changes
- taste is individual & many do like the taste
- there is a range of flavours
- avoid the negative impact of telling someone what you think

In 451 ICU patients, the Sit To Stand Test had very good clinimetric properties to assess function at ICU and hospital discharge

Authors call out the differing recommendations by ASPEN/ESPEN/Canadian guidelines on fibre use in enterally tube fed critically-ill adults.
We recommend this paper - NOT TO BE OVERLOOKED!

🥜Very interesting to hear about the average consumption of nuts in the UK diet.
🥜Intake is low, with only 11% of UK adults consuming whole tree nuts.
🥜Median intake - 6.5g/day.

For the management of MND @seanwhite1977 speaking @BAPENUK says "Timing matters for nutrition support, >10% weight loss before gastrostomy = poorer outcomes". For those with MND who are tube fed https://t.co/aDOBUbVXK7 is a great resource.
