He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. This designation often means that the cat will be given very little time for rescue/foster/adoption.🔥🔥🔥🔥

Mugen is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because his previous owner reports he is as a friendly, talkative, affectionate, active, and playful indoor cat who spends most of his time in the living room of his home when he is not following his people around in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. He is noted by his previous adopter to struggle with new people and to prefer contact on his own terms which is also a preference/need that the shelter environment by nature is not conducive to providing for. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help him adjust to their new home. A volunteer writes: For half a very surprising second, I'd left Mugen waiting for pets. He was standing at the front and had presented me with his beautiful forehead. Headbunting into the hand I'd extended as soon as I realized what was happening, this was quite a bit different from a few minutes earlier when Mugen had gracefully hopped on top of his bed upon seeing me at the door. I really thought that space was as far as our friendship would go, which is always ok but after peering over and around my head for several minutes, Mugen had a change of heart. Extending his neck a little and trying to walk forward, I appreciate his thoughtfulness and understand that none of it's magic. Mugen takes his time to come around, but when he's ready, he does. He was brought to us after he followed someone home and since he lived there for a little while, they were able to see his curious and gentle side. Mugen is hoping to find a forever family to give him another chance.❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻

A volunteer writes: Octopus gave birth in a laundromat. I guess, she wanted a clean environment for her brood. She was not allowed to stay and was brought to the Manhattan Care Center with her few days old babies. Octopus was stressed and had a very hard time nursing so the eight babes were placed and fed in an incubator. Octopus remained defensive with her caretakers and not open to having a trusting relationship with them. Lately, Octopus is showing signs that she might want to engage with staff and volunteers. She likes treats and as she spends more time on top of her hiding place than in, I presented her with a tray of high end cat food that I held. She came forward and after some hesitation and back and forth, she ate while I was with caution, petting her(see video). I was not so lucky with feather wands she seemed to be scared of. Nothing really is known about Octopus. Was she a stray, a pet who got out of luck? We all wish Octopus could be given a chance because even if she shows tiny improvements at the care center, being in a quiet home with a compassionate while experienced adopter or foster could be the light at the end of the tunnel for her...Will you be Octopus' hero? ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻

Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻
