But after two weeks, the club says no. The feedback: “He struggles with positional discipline. He does not respond to tactical corrections.”

The winger is not unintelligent. He was never trained to adapt.

In Nigeria, he played on mud pitches where tactics were a luxury. In Belgium, he is expected to learn a new system in days.

He has no framework for that kind of rapid cognitive adaptation. This is the hidden tax on African football.

Our players are not less smart. They are less trained in the specific skill of tactical learning. And until we start teaching that skill at home, we will keep exporting athletes who fail at the first intellectual hurdle.

A few thoughts on Hamza and Jesse Bisiwu after watching them.

Hamza: The first thing that stands out is his movement. For someone his age, he already knows how to attack space, make blindside runs and time his movements like a proper No. 9. That’s a very promising foundation.

The downside is that everything after the run still needs work. His agility, hold-up play, link-up and overall composure aren’t there yet. The potential is obvious, but I think people should be patient. Senior football is a completely different beast.

Jesse Bisiwu: He’s probably the more exciting player to watch right now. His dribbling, acceleration and close control are all very impressive for his age. If he keeps developing physically, I can definitely see him becoming a dangerous one-on-one winger.

That said, expecting him to produce goals and assists for the first team already would be unfair. His decision-making is still raw, which is completely normal at this stage of his development.

Both have exciting potential, but neither should be judged as first-team players just yet. Let them grow.
