Sweden is officially trading screens and tablets for physical books and handwriting to reverse a decline in reading skills.

Once at the forefront of hyper-digitalized learning, Sweden is engineering a dramatic pivot back to the basics in its classrooms. Concerned that an overreliance on digital tablets and screens has eroded reading comprehension and foundational writing skills, Swedish education officials are investing heavily in traditional printed textbooks.

The national strategy aims to phase out digital devices for children under the age of six entirely, following a drop in international reading assessment scores.

Experts point out that while technology was championed to level the playing field, its unrestricted use has instead led to shorter attention spans and reduced retention among younger learners.

Scientific evidence strongly supports this retro transition. Research indicates that the physical act of handwriting activates complex neural networks governing motor skills, vision, memory, and language—cognitive benefits that are largely lost on a keyboard.

Furthermore, reading from a printed page provides critical spatial cues that aid comprehension, unlike digital screens that often subject students to cognitive fatigue and constant distractions. While computers and tablets remain valuable tools for research and collaboration, educators worldwide are watching Sweden's massive reinvestment in physical books as a potential blueprint for a more balanced, science-backed approach to modern schooling.

In Pericoco, about 1.15 hours from Caracas, many people are worried about the economy. They were already struggling after years of economic crisis in Venezuela. With the earthquake much of those who work in agriculture here say sales have dropped as restaurants etc aren’t buying, Those working in restaurants and tourism say right now there’s no work. Convite AC dropped some supplies there today as people are struggling to buy even basic items. Despite that, one family invited me to meet 102-year-old Carmen in their house, made me fresh lemonade and insisted they prepared me arepas. I had to politely refuse (about 3 times) as the team was waiting for me so we could head back to Caracas. Generosity of people here never fails to touch me deeply.

Marshall, your outrage is warranted. What is happening in Caracas is indefensible.

But this is not drift or accident. It is U.S. policy.

What we are seeing is not happening despite Washington. It is happening because Washington is permitting it, structuring it, and even rationalizing it.

The same officials who boast about “running Venezuela” are the ones tolerating the backdrifting of Delcy Rodríguez, a figure with zero democratic legitimacy, sustained by the very machinery of repression that devastated the country.

To boot, OFAC licenses are issued in the name of stability, but their logic is access and profit, not democracy. The language is policy. The substance is accommodation.

More than 90 days after Maduro’s removal, more than 500 political prisoners remain in jail. That is not a trivial detail. It is the tell. Whatever was negotiated, it was not justice, and it was certainly not a clean break with the past.

Now we are asked to accept that figures like General Gustavo González López, long associated with systemic abuse, can be repurposed into partners because someone in Washington believes they can be controlled. That is not realism. That is self-deception dressed up as “brilliant” strategy.

This is the core contradiction: the United States claims to be managing a transition while simultaneously praising and empowering the very actors who made a real transition impossible for years.

Call it stability if you wish. But if the prisons remain full, amnesty is a sham, the same networks hold power, and the same methods persist, then nothing fundamental has changed.

That isn’t leading to a transition; it’s simply an amoral rearrangement.
