Obstetric cardiac arrest
Let’s look at the big picture….
So among 355,000 obstetric anaesthetic interventions in a year in UK (delivered to approximately 50% of all births & at all times of day and night almost exclusively in the NHS)
Incidence of obstetric cardiac arrest
-Epidural for labour
1 in 56,500
- any anaesthesia for LSCS
1 in 8,500
-All epidurals & spinals
1 in 17,000
-all GAs
1 in 1,200
These fall into ‘big data’
They are no substitute for an RCT in assessing safety (except no such RCT exists or is likely to)
There will clearly be confounding by intention (the very highest risk cases more likely to have GA)
…..but they do provide welcome evidence of the absolute safety of obstetric epidurals& spinals (& possibly relative safety compared to GA…)
I think a credit to UK obstetric anaesthesia & wider surgical & midwifery teams.

Definite flaw in new HMRC calc
We can check this on HMRC's existing AA calc
Putting same data in both yields different results
(My maths matches existing calcs🥳)
'amount on which tax due' overstated by £13,273, which reduces compensation paid out
(Data set & results below)

After over 25 years of research, a team co-led by surgeons at @ImperialNHS and @OUHospitals has performed the UK's first womb transplant - and given a woman born without a functioning womb the possibility of getting pregnant and carrying her own baby (1/2).
Read this and never even think of voting for the charlatans who have reduced the NHS to this desperate state … My reasons for striking. - Lucy Gossage https://t.co/N8Fqa7yery
If you’re a consultant or work with consultants, it’s important to pass on this warning: the next 48 hours of media coverage will be relentlessly negative about doctors. They’ll harp on about private work, pensions, inflation and all kinds of nonsense.
Forewarned is forewarned.
🔓NAP7 and obstetric activity: important and measured.
"Important findings of relevance to obstetrics include the volume of out-of-hours activity and median BMI of the obstetric population, both of which have increased substantially."
