Further, these outcome responses do not relate to future learning in the way that would be expected from prediction-error driven updating. Conclusion: still a lot of work to do to understand how outcome responses behave and what they potentially reflect!

In three fear-conditioning studies we compared responses to expected vs. unexpected outcomes and relate these responses to learning. We find some evidence for larger responses to unexpected outcomes, but this effect appears dependent on experimental conditions.

We aimed to replicate an influential memory reconsolidation study from our own lab, but did not find any evidence for reconsolidation. Understanding the conditions that drive reconsolidation remains a complex challenge, but we speculate about some explanations in the discussion.

Stability (vs variability) in spatial contexts can promote memory integration and strengthening — unless context is reinstated at memory retrieval.
