A powerful reflection from Nakiisa Rogers, MD, a Radiologist specializing in Breast Imaging, on how her understanding of vitamin D has evolved through this course.
Her experience reflects a deeper shift in perspective, moving beyond conventional messaging into a more complete understanding of vitamin D as a biologically active hormone system with wide-reaching implications for clinical practice and patient care.
When clinicians engage with the science at this level, it doesn’t just expand knowledge, it transforms how care is delivered and how patients are guided in real-world settings.

☀️ Can Sun Exposure and Vitamin D Influence Cancer Risk?
For many years, sunlight has been viewed primarily as something to avoid. But what if the conversation is more nuanced?
A growing body of research suggests that maintaining healthy vitamin D levels, supported by sensible sun exposure, when appropriate, may play an important role in long-term health, including reducing the risk of certain cancers.
In Dr. Cedric Garland's webinar, he shares decades of research exploring the relationship between "sun exposure, vitamin D status, and cancer risk."
Some of the key insights include:
• Higher vitamin D status and greater solar UVB exposure are consistently associated with lower rates of metastatic and fatal cancers, particularly colorectal and breast cancer.
• Maintaining a serum 25(OH)D level of "50 ng/mL (125 nmol/L) or higher" may provide greater protection than lower commonly recommended targets.
• Because vitamin D needs vary from person to person, "esting your vitamin D level" is one of the best ways to understand what is right for you.
• Intelligent sun exposure, getting enough sunlight to produce vitamin D while avoiding sunburn, can be an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
Research continues to deepen our understanding of vitamin D's role in health, and informed conversations are essential as the evidence evolves.
