Usually in my OPD, I see grandparents being cared for by their sons, daughters or daughters-in-law.
But whenever I see a grandson helping his grandfather walk into my clinic, waiting patiently, offering water or listening carefully to the instructions, I quietly tell the family:
This is a blessing.
Not only because the grandfather is receiving good care.
But because the grandson is also shaping his own mind.
Caring for an older person teaches something no classroom can.
It teaches patience.
It teaches responsibility.
It teaches empathy.
It teaches that another person's struggle deserves your time.
These qualities are built through repeated experiences, not by advice alone.
Research suggests that meaningful involvement with grandparents is associated with greater prosocial behaviour and stronger family connectedness in young people, while appropriate caregiving responsibilities can foster maturity and compassion. At the same time, the responsibility should always be age-appropriate and supported by the family.
Many parents ask me how to raise kind, responsible children.
Sometimes, the answer is already sitting at home.
Let your children spend time with their grandparents.
Let them help in small ways.
One day they may become better caregivers.
Long before that, they will become better human beings.
