12 years ago, pro-russian militants brutally tortured and murdered 16-year-old Stepan Chubenko from Kramatorsk.
They knocked out his teeth, bound his hands and feet with tape, removed his sneakers, pulled a T-shirt over his head, and forced him to his knees. One by one, three militants shot him in the head. His body was then wrapped in tarpaulin and buried by the river.
Before his execution, Stepan was tortured. Witnesses recalled how he was strangled with a towel, beaten so savagely that someone begged, “let’s finish it quickly.” They promised to spare his life if he joined the so-called “DNR,” but he refused.
His parents searched everywhere — hospitals, trenches, checkpoints. In Donetsk, Stepan’s mother, Stalina, once managed to speak to the then-DNR deputy interior minister Zakharchenko. The next day, he called her back and said: “Stepan was executed.”
The body was returned only in the fall of 2014. His grave shows the date of death as July 27; the court recorded July 28; his mother believes it may have been July 29. No one knows for certain. In 2022, vandals smashed his headstone. His parents disguised the grave so that strangers would not find it.
After 2022, they fled to Poltava. During air-raid sirens, Stalina carries two boxes of her son’s belongings into the corridor: a Shakhtar Donetsk mug, sports pants, a hoodie with “Glory to Ukraine,” and the T-shirt that militants pulled over his head before the execution. “Behind two walls, I hide Stepa’s things,” she says.
His parents later published his poetry collection, “I Understood the Meaning of Life.” “Stepa wanted Kramatorsk to be Ukraine. Let him guard his city,” his mother said.
In 2017, a Ukrainian court sentenced his three killers — Pogodin, Moskalyov, and Sukhomlinov — to life imprisonment in absentia.

38-year-old Andrii Matviichuk was captured by Russian troops in Bucha in March 2022. They tortured and interrogated him for half an hour and shot him in the arm and leg. Then they took him into the backyard and killed him.
Matviichuk was shot in the head by Artem Dementiev with his Vintorez rifle. Dementiev served as a reconnaissance sniper in Russia’s 234th Air Assault Regiment from Pskov, which occupied Bucha.
Dementiev walked the streets, killing, torturing and beating civilians, shooting people and taking them prisoner. Now Russia wants to award him the title of Hero, according to an investigation by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
At least four civilians in Bucha were shot dead with Dementiev’s Vintorez. Besides Matviichuk, they were Oleh Bilas, Viacheslav Hordiichuk and 54-year-old Volodymyr Kovtun.
During the occupation, Kovtun was staying with friends. He returned to his apartment to feed his dog. He was shot in the face there.
Dementiev tortured people at the Russian headquarters. He told one man: “I’m going to torture you now. I’ll cut off your finger joints until you tell me everything you know.”
He placed a knife and a meat tenderizing hammer in front of him, then beat him on the back with the hammer.
In the same building, Russian troops held civilians in the basement, where they beat and tortured them. The battalion command was based there.
One of the commanders stopped Dementiev in the middle of a torture session, saying they would still need those people.
The Russians then threatened the civilians with death and sent them under shellfire to retrieve the bodies of Russian soldiers. The civilians made two trips and brought back four bodies.
Dementiev stopped another man on the street. When the man turned around, Dementiev shot him in the leg. When other Russian soldiers saw the wound, Dementiev replied: “What did you expect? It’s 9 mm.” The man survived.
Dementiev told another Bucha resident that he would shoot every Ukrainian if he could.
At a checkpoint, Russian troops forced civilians to strip to the waist and searched their phones. Dementiev fired into the ground in front of people and threatened to shoot them if he saw their phones charged the next time.
A group of men from Bucha’s territorial self-defense was also brought to the Russian headquarters. Dementiev met them, showed Rosgvardia troops where to take the prisoners, and kicked one of them.
Near a fence, Russian troops began beating the men. Vitalii Karpenko was pulled up in front of the others and shot at point-blank range. He fell but was still moving. They finished him off with a shot to the head.
The Russians then executed the prisoners in the backyard. The bodies of eight local men were later found there.
Oleh Abramov was hiding at home with his wife Iryna and her father. Russian troops threw a grenade and opened fire on the house. Oleh crawled out on his knees with his hands raised and said: “There are civilians here. Don’t shoot.”
Dementiev entered the yard with other Russian soldiers. They searched the house. Dementiev threatened the family and took Oleh outside. He was stripped, forced onto his knees and shot in the head.
When Iryna came outside, Dementiev was walking away from her husband’s body. Blood was still pulsing from Oleh’s ear.
Iryna begged them to kill her too. Dementiev approached her several times, cocked his weapon and aimed it at her face. Then he lowered the gun, walked away, and came back again.
After Bucha, Russia promoted Dementiev, gave him an officer’s rank and awarded him four Medals “For Courage.”
On August 4, 2025, Dementiev died in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
After his death, his former school in Russia’s Rostov region installed a “Hero’s Desk” in his honor. It said he had demonstrated “exceptional courage and resilience,” while his teachers described him as “kind, compassionate and honest.”
Anyone thinking Ukraine should ‘concede terrirory for peace’ should look at what happens to Ukrainians in occupied territories
One of the worst humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Oleshky today. Mass starvation and murder by drones. That’s what happens.
