Destruction of the Amazon is tragic. Presenting it as a tipping point from rainforest to savanna is irresponsible. Forest is becoming degraded. Savanna is a unique ancient biome well apart from forest. Brazilian savanna is a global biodiversity hotspot. https://t.co/ZjUouQSApA
Thrilled to share the publication of the second chapter of my PhD thesis.

Evidence of animals and fire-shaped grasslands over millions of years in Central Madagascar.

Asian savannas have been misinterpreted as degraded forests due to timber oriented focus since the colonial period. In our paper, we showed that the understorey grass layer should be taken into account for the conservation of savannas. @geobiodiversity https://t.co/IxWiPjyCqo
As a grassland ecologist, how can one NOT enjoy this title (and the accompanying research)...
Grasses continue to trump trees at soil carbon sequestration following herbivore exclusion in a semi‐arid African savanna https://t.co/YQuTE9s4cE
Let’s deal with the climate crisis AND work for an environmentally and socially just future. Tree planting is not a silver bullet, lets face up to that. Listen in to @BBCNewshour about 39 mins in to think about the complexities of tree planting. https://t.co/JrHdLDuwk1
Some serious discussion with local community about how these exclosures would help them to improve understanding their grazing lawn productivity to better feed their animals @TeamKMCC @vorontsovams @Caroaceae

Wrote a @ConversationUK piece about our recently published wrk on savanna grasses having a 'memory' of being burned which may help recovery after future 🔥. Plants from places tht burn rarely (e.g.the Amazon) are unlikely to possess such a defence against🔥https://t.co/Z1vEH50dCl
"Increasing the tree cover in the savannas and grasslands can mean plant & animal species which prefer open, well-lit environments are pushed out. Studies from Africa, Australia and Brazil indicate that unique biodiversity is lost as tree cover increases."

In the past we have installed firebreaks to protect the vulnerable Ankafobe Forest #Madagascar from wildfires. Effective but a thick carpet of grass builds up between the firebreak and the forest = fire risk. Now reducing this risk with controlled early season grassland burns.
