Meganium hate is tied to the fact pokemon was a game played primarily by little boys. Little boys think spiky Gators and fire-bears are cooler than flower cucumber. This is because they are correct.

@MarinoMinister tbh I think totodile is more the 'hard' mode for gen 2 specifically, flying types and bug types are extra dreadful, and gengar is a problem for all 3 starters due to hypnosis rng. feraligatr is kind of shafted by gyarados + the move split.
