I stood alongside some of Nigeria’s finest legal minds at the opening of the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at Eko Hotel, Lagos. This significant event brought together not just scholars, economists, and policymakers, but those truly committed to advancing the crucial relationship between government and citizens, with a sharp focus on confronting the economic challenges facing our nation.

The conference was formally opened by Vice President Sen. Kashim Shettima, who, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, called on Nigerians to rally behind the bold reforms our administration is championing, including the removal of fuel subsidies—an essential step to curbing corruption and paving the way for sustainable growth.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, delivered a powerful keynote address. She rightly challenged the legal community to hold politicians accountable when they fall short of the social contract with the people. Her recognition of the strides in diversifying Nigeria’s exports is commendable, though her warning against the entanglement of politics and policy must be heeded.

In my remarks, I did not only commend Dr. Okonjo-Iweala for her unparalleled contributions but also took the opportunity to remind the NBA of Plateau State’s unwavering support. I expressed gratitude to the NBA for selecting Plateau as the host for its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting earlier this year and assured them that Plateau State stands ready to welcome future NBA conferences with the same warmth and commitment.

I reaffirmed our administration’s relentless dedication to upholding our social contract with the people of Plateau State. Our actions are not merely local but contribute to the broader fabric of national governance and accountability. Together, we shall drive the change our nation desperately needs.
