Two reasons i can think of:
1) people will ask accountability on other issues as well, may demand resignation for other ministers
2) the bigger reason I feel is Modi's 56 inch ego

I really don’t understand why Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation is such a big deal.

In this country, ministers have resigned many times. Forget that, ministers themselves have resigned on moral grounds.

For example, during the Vajpayee government, when Nitish Kumar was the Railway Minister, there was a major train accident in Gaisal. He came out and said - “इतने लोगों की जान चली गई. मैं इस पद पर कैसे बना रह सकता हूँ?” He offered to resign.

Why is this such a big deal for the current government? It’s not like the opposition or the protesters will become the Education Minister. The BJP is still in power. Another BJP leader will become the minister. (Agar kuch zyada hi pyaar hai Pradhan se, toh usko koi aur portfolio de dena)

I know changing the minister is not going to make any major difference to the education system. But at least, in the public eye, it sends a clear message that this is not tolerated. Done and dusted

Here is the government’s ego, nothing else. They will definitely happy pay the price for this.
