You mentioned how the Apostles introduced themselves. I don't see where the Most Highly Esteemed Rev Tom posted the video himself and introduced himself as the Most Highly Esteemed Rev Tom. Again, you're fighting because you're not familiar with the title/term.

So I responded to a tweet yesterday and was mostly disappointed at the responses, albeit not surprised…

I queried the use of the title “THE MOST HIGHLY ESTEEMED REVEREND” for a man. I love Pastor Chris and the Loveworld ministry, but I am not familiar with many of their other pastors. So when I saw the above title used for the pastor next to Pastor Chris, I was totally taken aback because I am not sure I have ever seen such a title used for a minister before.

And before anyone misconstrues my point, this is not an attack on the man, his ministry, his calling, or the miracle being testified about. My concern is specifically with the title.

These are the reasons why I feel using such a title for a mere mortal is not correct:

“Most Highly Esteemed” goes considerably beyond ordinary honour.

Scripture absolutely teaches us to honour spiritual leaders. “Esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake” (1 Thessalonians 5:12–13). So there is nothing unbiblical about esteeming ministers of God highly.

But notice the difference: Paul says believers should esteem them very highly; he does not establish “Most Highly Esteemed” as an ecclesiastical rank or title. One is an instruction concerning the attitude believers should have toward faithful ministers; the other turns a description of honour into an exalted designation attached permanently to a person’s name.

Those are not necessarily the same thing.

Another thing is that there is a difference between honouring God’s servants and magnifying them.

I strongly believe in honour. In fact, dishonouring genuine servants of God is not something Scripture encourages. Paul says elders who rule well should be “counted worthy of double honour”

But biblical honour must have boundaries.

Look at how the apostles introduced themselves:

Paul — “a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle” (Romans 1:1).

Peter — “an apostle of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:1).

James — “a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ” (James 1:1).

Jude — “the servant of Jesus Christ” (Jude 1:1).

These were men through whom extraordinary miracles occurred, churches were established, the dead were raised and portions of Scripture were written. Yet the grandeur of their spiritual authority did not produce increasingly grandiose personal titles.

There is something worth learning from that.

If Reverend is insufficient, and Highly Esteemed Reverend is insufficient, such that we arrive at “THE MOST HIGHLY ESTEEMED REVEREND,” what theological principle determines the ceiling?

This is why the issue is bigger than semantics.

Titles shape culture. Culture shapes perception. And over time, language intended merely to communicate honour can inadvertently create an unhealthy elevation of personalities around whom believers begin to construct almost untouchable statuses.

We should be able to question that without being accused of dishonouring God’s servants.

I can honour Pastor Chris. I can celebrate what God is doing through Loveworld. I can rejoice at someone’s testimony of healing. I can respect another minister whom I don’t personally know.

And simultaneously say:

“I don’t think ‘The Most Highly Esteemed Reverend’ is an appropriate title for a Christian minister.”

If Paul said esteem highly and you agree with it, what's the issue with calling him most highly esteemed to show we esteem him highly ?

Is most highly esteemed a title reserved for Jesus Christ ?

@niyiomotayo @Row_Haastrup @JZiotern This is the point. He doesn't like the title that's why he's trying to use scripture to fight it. Rev Tom is called Rev. Tom everywhere. The only place you will find him being called most highly esteemed is within the CE Ministry and the title is reserved for the Lord Jesus.
