A video is circulating on Russian Telegram channels of someone burning the flag of the Russian Empire in Bashkortostan.

The black, yellow and white flag was the official flag of the Russian Empire for a brief period in the 19th century, but in modern times it has been adopted by Russian monarchists and nationalists. It is also used in an official capacity, alongside the flag of the Russian Federation and the USSR. This symbol represents the continuity of the Russian Empire, used by Russian imperialists to highlight its grandeur and colonial power.

It is no surprise that in many regions of the Russian Federation, where peoples oppressed by Russians live—such as in Bashkortostan, home to the Bashkirs—this symbol provokes rejection and even disgust.

Bashkortostan is one of many internal colonies of the Russian Federation. The land is rich in natural resources, such as gas and oil, but Moscow profits at the expense of the Bashkirs. There is an independence movement in the republic, which Telegram channels link to the recent flag-burning incident.

True victory over Russia and the removal of the threat it poses to global stability will only come with the downfall of the Empire.

New Year’s greetings from Ukrainian volunteer Hollandets (Dutchman).

Hollandets, or Denys Khrystov worked successfully as a TV presenter on Ukrainian entertainment and music channel M1. But once the war started, he became a volunteer. He began delivering food, water and humanitarian aid to the frontlines, but saw that there was another crucial need – evacuation of civilians.

Hollandets has been to the hottest spots on the frontlines – including Bakhmut, Orikhiv, Marinka, and Selydove – and documented his experiences in organizing safe passage for local residents on social media. He recently released a short documentary 1% of War, where he shows the tough everyday realities of the Russian invasion, and its impact on the lives of ordinary Ukrainians.
