The transition to agriculture set in motion socioeconomic developments that eventually resulted in the emergence of states. In this paper with Oana Borcan and @LPBetterWorld, we characterize this empirical relationship in a global sample. (1/3) https://t.co/4f7N0eyYi8
To make the U.S. a democracy, we need to have a law according to which any candidate or party that publicly expresses that he/she/it cannot commit to the vote count determining the election outcome is promptly removed from the ballot https://t.co/RcasbxYAtO

The prospect for democracy in our world is as much dimmed by the likes of McConnell, Graham, and Cruz as by Putin, Xi and Erdogan. Disgrace, not holding Trump accountable for attempting a coup. America, America, please “shed disgrace on these.”
McConnell’s speech calling Trump responsible for the Capitol riot isn’t enough. McConnell must go down in history as an abettor of a dictator. America is without hope, having such unprincipled people pretending allegiance to it and being tolerated.
Care to live in a democracy? Then let’s invite states in which most prefer a dictatorship to exit our union. Let McConnell and the rest live under dictators and be gone from our midst; let’s create a more perfect union without them. https//www.louisputterman.com
Every senator who votes against convicting Trump is casting a vote to end America’s commitment to electoral democracy. People died for this system; these R.s are traitors to it, plain and simple. They should be barred from holding office, because they stand with dictatorship.
U.S. needs a requirement that a candidate commit to respecting democratic elections or be removed from ballot. R.’s unwilling to adopt such a requirement in their party should also be barred from office. Democracy is over in US if we allow dictatorship enthusiasts in Senate, WH.
Why don’t Americans create qualifications for holding public office? Our institutions allow a hate-mongering sociopath to be President or a religious fanatic to be on the Supreme Court. See my blog on #racism and #democracy: https://t.co/KvF7anPOip
Members of Congress in a major US political party were unwilling to clearly renounce a would-be dictator today. May their names be preserved on a roster of shame by all who uphold the ideal of elected government any place on this planet for the rest of time. Zero integrity, they.
Every vote against impeachment today should be remembered for all of history as going on record to say that attempting to overturn an election is just fine, so long as you happen to be on my side. Every such vote cast will bring justifiable solace to Putin, Xi and Erdogan.
Many in the US House are prepared to go down in history as having aided and abetted an attempt to through out the 2020 presidential vote. Additional colleagues will join them today by voting to exonerate a President who spent months trying to get the results thrown out.
Should the US consider censoring of lies? Germany banned Holocaust denial, but America has no constraints or standards, no checks on incendiary hate speech and falsehoods. #USElections#DumpTrump See my latest blog on #democracy in America: https://t.co/KvF7anPOip
The Times is also right McConnell did too little too late. Trump should have been removed for treason and for openly stating his unwillingness to respect our system of government and the principle of electoral democracy long, long ago. His enablers belong in Profiles in Perfidy.
NY Times editorial board is right that not only must Trump be impeached or prosecuted for fomenting insurrection, but all his enablers must be held to account. Germany’s Post-War de-Nazification should hold lessons for fighting the anti-democratic ultra-right white nationalists.
As John Micklethwait and @adwooldridge write in https://t.co/PKsIDGzNs9, citizens of all countries need governments to serve the people. See my latest blog:

In today’s complex world, what we all need is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, lest we—the people—perish from the earth. #COVID#politics2020 https://t.co/7mFiXkbe6H
