Of all the gates in all the walls in all the world, THIS one has to be my favourite. Of course it's beautiful all year round, leading to the most perfect view of my own home village, but it looks at its glowing best as the evening light spills through the Hope Valley onto the houses in the trees.

Imagine ancient ancestors thousands of years ago coming to the sacred site of Stonehenge and seeing this and feeling their breath deepen as they took in the awe inspiring beauty and perfection of it.
Nobody actually rowed from Norway to Iceland.
The long crossings, to Iceland, Greenland, North America, were sailed. The ship that carried the settlers, the knarr, was a fat cargo hull built around one square sail. It carried only a handful of oars, for working it in and out of harbour.
The longship was the real rower: long, low, 20 to 60 oars. But the oars were for the coast, not the ocean. Fjords, river mouths, dead calm, headwinds, and battle, where it could stop, turn and strike like no sailing ship could.
Under oars you got 4 or 5 knots. Under sail, 15 or more. The wind crossed the sea. The oars did the close work.
And no one was chained to a bench. The men who rowed were the men who sailed and fought. An oar was a warrior's job, not a slave's.
So when the wind died offshore, they waited. They kept the oars for the coast and let the wind do the rest.
Iceland had the Viking clap at Euro 2016. Norway, back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, has rowing.
The stands row in unison. Yesterday even parliament joined in mid-session. A nation of rowers, and there is history behind that👇
To George and Laura, Bill and Hillary — we're grateful for your friendship, counsel, and devotion to this country. And to Joe and Jill, thank you for being on this journey with us.
To know Barack and Michelle is to understand: They have always believed that leadership is about leaving something behind that empowers others.
Today's opening of the Obama Presidential Center reflects that vision. It will continue to invest in future generations and encourage people to see themselves as part of something bigger.
Congratulations, my friends. What a remarkable day.
More than 40 years ago, I arrived in Chicago in search of an idea. I was a young man looking for purpose, who believed deeply in America, was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, and wanted to be a part of something larger. The America I believed in was one where everyone has opportunity, everyone is seen, everyone belongs—because that was an America that had a place for me, too.
@bbclaurak@BBCOne@BBCiPlayer Did it not occur to John Curtis that LibDems, Conservative and Green supporters turned out to vote for Andy Burnham not against Keir Starmer but against the party of hatred Reform?
@karenfthompson I'm up watching Scotland v Haiti and enjoying the fact that where I live everything is very quiet at this time of night and you can hear yourself think lol. And to answer your question yes but it was a wooden spoon when I was that age, happy times🥰
It's a simple scene, as so many of mine are, but I can't tell you how much my heart is lifted by the sight of fields full of wildflowers, scattered with barns. I wish you could have also heard the cuckoo calling and the bees buzzing as I stood here, and felt the sunshine on your face. Sometimes all you need in life is an old wooden gate to lean on, and the English countryside in June.

‘My wife and I were greatly saddened to learn of the death of David Hockney O.M., a giant of the world of art and painting, a Yorkshireman through and through and a dear friend and inspiration to so many.
David was one of life’s true originals; one who wore his genius as lightly as those beloved yellow Crocs of his that helped brighten Palace occasions. I trust they will see him tread safely into the hereafter as we mourn a man whose irrepressible charm, talent and constant innovation will be most sorely missed, but whose dazzling creativity lives on in galleries and museums around the world.’
