One of the most ironic details in Harry Potter is that Snape’s attempt to save Lily may have created the exact circumstances that destroyed Voldemort. Snape begged Voldemort to spare Lily after learning that the prophecy had put her and her family in danger. Voldemort ultimately honored that request enough to give Lily multiple opportunities to step aside when he reached the Potters’ house. James was killed immediately because Voldemort had no reason to spare him, but Lily was different: Voldemort explicitly wanted her out of the way rather than dead. The books make clear that this choice mattered, because Lily’s death became a willing sacrifice rather than simply an ordinary murder.

And that is where the irony becomes almost perfect. Lily refused every chance to save herself and placed herself between Voldemort and Harry, triggering the ancient protection that caused the Killing Curse to rebound. Harry survived, Voldemort lost his body, and the chain of events that eventually destroyed him began that night. Even the official Wizarding World has pointed out the possibility that Snape’s plea inadvertently caused his own master’s downfall. Snape wasn't planning some masterstroke he wanted Lily alive, nothing more. But Voldemort's decision to honor one Death Eater's personal request gave Lily the choice that made her sacrifice possible. Snape asked Voldemort to spare Lily. Voldemort granted the request. Lily chose Harry. And that choice ultimately created the boy who would destroy Voldemort.

I can only imagine the relief and triumph Dumbledore must have felt when he realized Voldemort had used Harry’s blood.

Harry tells him that Voldemort said his blood would make him stronger because it carried the protection Lily left in him meaning Voldemort could finally touch Harry without being hurt.

And for just a fleeting moment, Harry notices something like triumph in Dumbledore’s eyes.

Then it’s gone.

Because by this point, Dumbledore already had the diary, knew Voldemort had made a Horcrux, and strongly suspected there were more. He was already putting the pieces together.

I can’t help but wonder if Dumbledore had started considering the possibility that Harry himself might be a Horcrux and that destroying Voldemort might ultimately require Harry to die too.

Then Voldemort made the one mistake Dumbledore needed.

He used Harry’s blood to resurrect himself.

And suddenly, Harry’s survival became possible.

That tiny gleam of triumph in Dumbledore’s eyes hits very differently when you know what he was probably beginning to understand.

His first real introduction to the house is Draco Malfoy, a boy who immediately insults Ron and treats Harry like a celebrity he can recruit. Then Harry meets Snape, hears that Voldemort was a Slytherin and spends years watching the story place most of its villains in green and silver. Of course Harry and by extension the reader learns to associate Slytherin with danger.

But the books themselves constantly prove that the House isn’t the problem. Pettigrew was a Gryffindor. Quirrell was a Ravenclaw. Lockhart was a Ravenclaw. Slughorn, Regulus, Narcissa and even Snape show completely different sides of what a Slytherin can be. Ambition and self-preservation aren’t evil. They’re just traits that become dangerous depending on what someone chooses to do with them.

And that’s why the Battle of Hogwarts criticism is so uncomfortable. The series spends years teaching us that judging people by their House is shallow, then gives us a moment where Slytherin students are essentially treated as a collective threat. The Sorting Hat never created good people and bad people. The wizarding world just became very comfortable pretending it did.
