Situation: You are checking in after a job interview or a big client pitch. It has been a week. You want to know if you got the job, but asking "Do you have an update?" screams desperation.

Why it works: You bring brand new value to their day instead of extracting an update from them. It bumps your name to the top of their inbox, proves you are actively thinking about their business, and naturally prompts them to give you a status update in their reply.
