BREAKING: USAID official and 3 company executives plead guilty in fraud and bribery scheme involving at least 14 contracts worth over $550 million

USAID Official Roderick Watson took bribes, was showered with lavish gifts— including cash, laptops, thousands of dollars in tickets to a suite at an NBA game, a country club wedding, downpayments on two residential mortgages, cell phones, and jobs for relatives.

In exchange for the bribe payments, Watson influenced the award of contracts by manipulating the procurement process at USAID.

Watson faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

Wages, rising cost of ingredients, high rent rates, insurance, all play a huge reason why menu prices continue to rise. What many restaurants are paying in rent is unsustainable if their sales are mediocre, that’s why a lot of them are starting to go out of business.
Note: Whatever a restaurant’s monthly rent is, they must generate 16.6X in sales. If rent is $60 psf for a 5000 sq ft space, then their annual rent is $300,000 dollars. This doesn’t include CAM (common area maintenance). The monthly rent alone is $25,000 dollars. The restaurant will need to generate sales each month of at least $416,500 or $5 million per year. Food, labor and packaging combined can account for anywhere from 60-70%. Add in insurance, telephone, water, gas, electricity, Repairs & Maintenance, uniforms, linen, trash service, credit card fees, franchise tax, alcohol tax, health insurance, door dash fees, etc., it’s a wonder why anyone would want to go into the restaurant business, especially with high overhead and an unproven concept.

@willcain @rickreichmuth Will - so very sorry for your personal losses❤️. Very glad your mom is ok and she could get off island. My fam went to Maui Jan 2020 and our local driver on Rd to Hana pointed out all the bare fields that used to be sugar cane. He said big fire hazard and locals concerned.
