It was a great honor and pleasure today to pay my respects to King Tupou VI of Tonga at the Royal Palace in Nukuโalofa. Tonga was never colonized, and has been ruled by kings for over 1,000 years. Our two countries are committed to boosting economic and security cooperation. It is a surreal experience to meet someone and then see their face on a coin! ๐บ๐ธ๐ค๐น๐ด
Illegal fishing and drug smuggling are big problems facing Pacific nations, including both the US and Tonga. The Prime Minister and I boarded a visiting US Coast Guard cutter to see its capabilities firsthand. And the Crown Prince and I signed an enhanced โship riderโ agreement to enhance cooperation between the Coast Guard and Tongan authorities. Also great discussions on energy security and fuel storage. Great day for US/Tonga relations! ๐บ๐ธ๐ค๐น๐ด
