[Stan Collymore @StanCollymore]

I contacted Bordeaux owner, Gérard Lopez about 2 years ago when it was evident that the club was struggling. Soft spot for them as I'd played ( swapped Jean Pierre Papin's shirts both UEFA Cup legs) against them and have spent a good amount of time in what is a great city. Going to the Olympic football there next week.

I offered contacts, logistical help with networks of people ( in France and England), agents, ideas, you name it because I know people close to the club who were then worried about relegation and the significant financial drop off outside of Ligue 1.

Today, one of France's biggest clubs have effectively folded due to people who come into a sport of which they know nothing, give jobs to people who know nothing and listen to people who don't understand the volatility of professional football. A blink of an eye ago they topped their Champions League group.

It didn't matter that Lopez couldn't be arsed with a reply, he has the stain of running a great club into the dust. It's the fact that many people reached out to offer help and he didn't rake it from anyone, and that's his biggest crime. Cocky and overconfident.

The truth is, without a more robust English pyramid and big £ going into the top 2 leagues in particular, Bordeaux's plight could easily been one of our top 10 historical clubs. Easily. We just have more money than sense to get out of it.

A sad day for French football and a timely reminder to English clubs what can happen.
