We are often asked what the city is doing to prevent youth violence. Oftentimes the successes are NOT seen in daily headlines. @ChristinaRaneTV, @Miranda__TV and I compiled one of the most powerful stories I’ve ever been a part of to validate some of the city’s work.

Six young men associated with groups prone to youth violence in Aurora received an ultimatum: We know who you are. We will help you. But this is your final warning.

The city’s SAVE (Standing Against Violence Every Day) program held its latest group meeting late last week. Under the SAVE program, law enforcement, community members, faith leaders, and community-based organizations come together to work toward the common goal of keeping young people most at risk of gun violence alive, safe and free.

I'm going to make this very clear for everyone who is pointing blame at @AuroraPD for the two escaped inmates from the Aurora ICE detention facility.
🔵 At 9:30pm. on 3/18, the facility experienced a power outage, which caused a door on the soccer facility to become unlocked, and two inmates walked out unnoticed.
🔵 At roughly 12:30am on 3/19, the facility finished their nightly head count and realized they were missing two people.
🔵 At roughly 2:30am on 3/19, the facility called 911 to report this to the Aurora Police. Now mind you, this is now 5 hours since these individuals have gone missing, and with short staffing levels, the Aurora Police must respond to priority 1 calls first, meaning crime is in progress. Not 5 hours later.
🔵 The Aurora Police arrived at 5 am on 3/19 and took a report. ICE was not very forthcoming with information. If these two men were being held on criminal detainers, APD could engage in a search immediately. Because they were both being held on civil detainers, local law enforcement can not engage. There is a Colorado state law that prohibits that.
These men are still not in custody. There is no update from @ERODenver as to what they are doing to search for these guys. If the Aurora Police come across them, they will absolutely arrest them as long as ICE gets warrants out for them. The truth of the matter here is that the finger pointing at APD will not be tolerated.

APD has been wrong several times. I have called them out several times. They are not wrong on this. ICE failed the proper protocols during a power outage and allowed two inmates to escape. ICE took 5 hours to call APD. By that point, those two men could be in Kansas. Instead of telling the truth about a terrible Colorado State law that prohibits local law enforcement from working with ICE, they decided to take a cheap shot at APD. Wrong!

There has been a lot of misleading information shared about what is happening in our city. Aurora is a safe community. Media have conflated and considerably exaggerated incidents that are isolated to a handful of problem properties alone.

Yes, we are concerned that there is a small Tren de Aragua (TdA) presence in Aurora and we have been taking it seriously. We have responded. We have made arrests. We will continue to make arrests. We will continue to address the problems that the absentee, out-of-state owners of these properties have allowed to fester unchecked. Aurora will aggressively pursue all actions available under city code and criminal statute.

As @AuroraPD shared, we have received questions about Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirino also known as “Cookie” or “Galleta.” We previously announced his arrest in connection to a July 28 shooting. We are able to confirm Pacheco-Chirino, 22, pictured here, is a documented member of Tren de Aragua (TdA). The department is not aware of his status within the gang. He is currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Local, regional and national media are leading the nation to believe that Aurora is wholly unsafe. That is simply not true. While these isolated situations are rightfully of great concern and warrant increased action and scrutiny, violent crime in the city is down in nearly all crime categories.

Going to grocery stores, parks, schools, banks, shopping centers, visiting with neighbors and other everyday activities remain unchanged.

The city and the Aurora Police Department (APD) will not make any conclusory statements about specific incidents or provide details about law enforcement strategy and operations. Doing so would be counterproductive to our public safety efforts.

Furthermore, as we have stated previously, the city and APD established a special task force in collaboration with other local, state and federal partners to specifically address concerns about TdA and other criminal activity affecting the metro community. We are grateful that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), a valuable federal partner, has acknowledged its ongoing work into TdA across the metro and appreciate the additional resources it provides to combat this issue.

We will continue to urge all community members to report crimes to local law enforcement.

Again, Aurora is a safe place to live, work and visit. It is tragic that select individuals and entities have mischaracterized our city based on isolated incidents. We encourage you to build up our community and not allow the hysteria of others to tear it down.
