Many global AI tools were hard to access in China, often requiring VPNs and extra setup. The cost was also high compared with local salaries. I didn't want my first step with every new technology to be researching how to bypass regulations just to use it.

In 2021, I graduated with my Master’s degree in Germany and moved back to China.

I worked there from 2021 to 2024. During those 3 years, I noticed a few undeniable trends in the data and tech industry.

Eventually, these trends made me realize I needed to leave. Here is why.

3. Budget Constraints Over Value Creation

Another issue was budget. Many companies in China operate with tight margins. In my case, we did not have enough Power BI Pro licenses, so part of my work became finding cheap workarounds instead of creating value.

2. The Great Tech Decoupling

From 2021 to 2024, the tech decoupling became clear. Global tools like Salesforce and Tableau were pulling back, while many companies moved to domestic ERP and cloud systems. For a Data Analyst, this matters

1. Two Separate Software Ecosystems

At work, I used global tools like Microsoft Teams and Power BI. But many domestic companies in China used local office suites and BI tools. China’s software ecosystem works, but it is separate from the global one.

Expectation: AI is taking over the world.

Reality: I’m watching a coworker manually type symbols into 500 cells of Excel.

I recently started a data role at a major company. A colleague asked for help converting positive numbers to negatives. I watched her demonstrate her workflow: she was manually adding a minus sign to every single cell. When I asked why, she said, "Using formulas and copying them causes errors."

I was speechless. 😳

So, whenever you see those "AI is replacing us" posts, just relax. The corporate world is still running on primitive tech. The world is just a giant mess held together by duct tape. Even if all you do is fix Excel sheets for people like this, you'll never be unemployed.
