In the world of unethical publishing there are many elephants in the room. What's yours?

I'll go first.

It's the fact that there is no universally agreed definition of predatory publishing, yet people ask all the time, "Is this journal predatory?" Sometimes it is obvious it is (or not). But there is a huge grey zone and you have to decide for yourself.

Just looking at the articles that have been published this year. Top of the pile is @Nature's @SciReports. As of 19 Dec 2024, the journal has published 30,447 (more than 80 every day). Their #APC is USD $2,590, so the revenue generated by this journal is USD $78,857,739.

There may be discounts, waivers, arrangements with institutions etc. but we have no way of knowing what these figures might be.
