It’s an unethical industry that CANNOT be allowed to exist. Except for countries like Ukraine, Iran, Colombia, Georgia and the USA, commercial surrogacy is strictly banned or limited to unpaid arrangements in most of the world.

Decades ago, there was a global effort to outlaw organ trading - because people had a fundamental problem with MEN’s bodies being commoditised and traded. You can’t put a price on a kidney, AND you cannot put a price on a woman’s reproductive labour. She is harming her body to give birth. Being a gay man or infertile woman does not make you a victim.

Asia had to ban commercial surrogacy because people from affluent countries were flying there to rent a womb for $1k per baby. Vulnerable young women got pregnant repeatedly for spare change from the rich.

In the US, the amount goes up to 30k, and that is still spare change for the rich. There are surrogacy agencies springing up all across the US to “connect” surrogates with wealthy couples - it is fundamentally unethical to support an industry that commoditises the bodies of vulnerable women.

You can be infertile, you can be desperate and dying, and you still do NOT have a right to buying organs or renting wombs.

Altruistic surrogacy - where you have a friend or family member who loves you and is willing to do it for free - is NOT the same as you paying a stranger for a commercial deal at arm’s length.

There are multitudes of ethical problems with this industry - including foetal abnormalities, the gestational surrogate’s health complications, and the inability to stuff the child back into the womb if the customer forfeits their order. These are all real fucking issues people had to deal with and consider.

Americans live in an ultra-capitalist hellhole, where companies buy blood plasma and purchase eggs from the poors and call it a “donation” to align themselves with international expectations. It is fundamentally dishonest to deny that such industries are inherently exploitative.

Affluent men and women do not have a right to exploit the bodies of others. “I paid for it / I didn’t force them / it’s unfair my kidneys failed / it’s unfair I can’t give birth / my money helped them feed them / they consented” is what the rich always say to excuse exploitation. You can excuse many evils behind a faceless industry.
