People don't hate Argentina.

Let's be honest for once in our lifetime.

People don't hate Argentina. They hate what Argentina becomes when Messi puts on that shirt. They hate what football becomes when Messi steps into the field. They hate how time travels when Messi controls the ball. They hate how records crumble when he leaves the field

It's not the 11 men on the field they have a problem with. It's the one man who makes the impossible look routine. It's the one man who, for nearly 20 years, has raised the bar so high no one else can touch it.

I see the posts. The tweets. The legends, the pundits, the analysts, the streamers, the bloggers all queuing up to tell you how bad Argentina is. How slow. How finished. How lucky. How inhumane. How they control everything.

But listen closely. When they say Argentina is bad, what they're really saying is: "I hope Messi is finally finished." That's the tax you pay for being great.

When you're average, you're invisible. When you're good, they applaud you. But when you're great, when you're generational, when you're the best you become a mirror. And people hate a mirror that reminds them they will never be you.

They criticize you because they can't become you. They doubt you because your very existence proves their excuses are false. So, if you feel that hate right now, if you feel the whole world waiting for Messi to fall, understand this: It means he is doing something right.

Where was this hate when Maradona punched the ball into the net and called it the "Hand of God"? Where was it in Messi's early years? Everyone loved him until he started destroying records.

Pundits got their predictions wrong, punters lost their bets, analysts failed to decode ideas on how to stop him, bloggers realized no article could explain how he plays, legends saw their records falling, and streamers just followed the trend. Rival fans started to watch football matches with microscopic eyes

Everyone felt threatened. Everyone's favourite legend suddenly looked ordinary. Every analyst opinion became meaningless. Football became chaos. No one could match his ability, master his craft, decode his tactics, or predict his vision. Rivalries became toxicity. So, they did the only thing left. They turned to insults, disrespect, and trash talking. When Kroos said, "football won" he meant all the anti-Messi campaign has paid off. When Ronaldo happily reacts to Messi criticism it's a signal of tapping out of the pitch to clout chasing. Remember that “the fall of the great is the joy of the mediocre.”

The hate is not a signal to quit. It's proof that you've made it. Greatness was never supposed to be comfortable. It was never supposed to be liked by everyone. Greatness was supposed to be lonely. It was supposed to be questioned. It was supposed to be attacked

Dear Messi, never make yourself smaller just to make them comfortable. Never apologize for being exceptional. Let them talk. Let them tweet. Let them record their videos. Let them edit your clips and exaggerate your mistakes

You keep going. Because in the end, history never remembers the critics. History remembers Messi

Le reprochan a los jugadores argentinos haberle dado la espalda a la coronación de los campeones del mundo. Maleducados y malos perdedores es lo menos que dicen en la prensa europa y también la estadounidense, parte de la narrativa instalada en el último tiempo, la que ahora los lleva casi a hablar de civilización o barbarie.
Este video lo tomé yo desde la tribuna de prensa. Se los regalo. Lo que vi fue a un grupo de jugadores heridos, con Lionel Messi al frente, de cara a sus hinchas. La coronación, que es hermosa para los campeones (España es un gran y justo campeón) y será inolvidable para Rodri y los suyos y para los hinchas, es una gran puesta televisiva. Ocurre en una porción del campo, de espaldas a más de la mitad del estadio. Y diría que es hasta lógico que así sea (luego, para eso, tenemos la vuelta olímpica). Nadie sabe qué hicieron los franceses en Qatar. Tampoco Argentina reclamó nada. No se reclama pleitesía a los perdedores porque ya bastante tienen con ser perdedores.
El fútbol en la Argentina es de los jugadores y su gente, mucho más que de los protocolos y la televisión, que también existen, por supuesto. Los jugadores argentinos fueron a ponerse de frente a su hinchada. El fútbol en Argentina es más colectivo de lo que creen conocer los cronistas del New York Times o los intelectuales europeos que se asoman a este deporte cada cuatro años.
Hablan de Argentina como individualidad -en contraposición al equipo España- porque no deben haber visto jugar un partido de esta selección en los últimos años. Sólo el que vio lo que armó Lionel Scaloni con Argentina sabe que hizo lo contrario a la idea de que solo sea Messi. Potenció a un equipo, a sus jugadores, a futbolista que podían ser comunes y que se convirtieron en estrellas. Scaloni formó futbolistas de selección. Argentina fue un equipo. No mostró lo mejor en este Mundial y, sin embargo, llegó a la final.
Esos jugadores argentinos tenían la medalla del segundo puesto colgada. Faltarle el respeto a España era sacársela. No me interesa defender todo, no me gustó nada ver a Paredes pelearse en la mitad de la cancha. Somos muchas veces también insoportables y cancheros. Pero, ¿leyeron algún escándalo por el sopapo que Bellingham le pegó al Colo Barco? Ahí estaban entretenidos porque los jugadores mostraron una bandera que reivindica a las Islas Malvinas. Porque cuando ganábamos también éramos los malos.
Somos diversos. Hay de todo. Nosotros también somos Scaloni yendo a calmar a todos. También somos Messi levándonos en la tristeza para abrazar a Yamal. No nos van a hacer creer lo que ustedes quieren creerse. Yo también, como esos jugadores, me hubiera ido a abrazar con los míos, y no estar escribiendo esto en un departamento de Nueva York.

1.- Expulsan con roja directa a Folarin Balogun, uno de los jugadores más importantes de la selección de Estados Unidos.

2.- Donald Trump llama personalmente a Gianni Infantino, presidente de la FIFA, para pedir que se revise la decisión.

3.- La FIFA suspende la sanción derivada de la tarjeta roja y Balogun queda habilitado para jugar contra Bélgica.

4.- Trump sale públicamente a agradecer a la FIFA por “hacer lo correcto” y “revertir una gran injusticia”.

El problema ya no es solamente si la roja era justa o injusta. El problema es el precedente.

Si el poder político puede tocar la puerta del organismo que debe garantizar la imparcialidad deportiva, la competencia deja de sentirse igual para todos.

Gracias, Trump. Gracias, FIFA. Gracias por abrir una grieta brutalmente peligrosa en el principio más sagrado del deporte: que todos compitan bajo las mismas reglas.

No es envidia. Ustedes fueron groseros con los ecuatorianos. Si hubieran sido buenos anfitriones, con gusto habríamos aplaudido a su país.
Pero no fue así. Faltaron al respeto a nuestros símbolos patrios y durante una semana muchos tuvimos que soportar insultos como “simios”, “monos” y otras expresiones ofensivas.
Ese comportamiento hizo que mucha gente terminara rechazando esa actitud. Y también sé que hay muchas personas de su país que sí se comportaron con respeto y hoy están avergonzadas por lo que hicieron algunos. Simplemente NO se puede justificar ese tipo de acciones.
