SEBI allows Jane Street to trade in Indian market, but refrains them to use the same trading pattern as done in past.
Exchanges are asked to monitor the activity on ongoing basis until the investigation is over.
Jane Street manipulated the Indian market on January 17, 2024, through the following strategy:
1. Initial Setup (Patch 1: 00:15 - 11:47):
• Jane Street India bought BANKNIFTY constituents in cash and futures, building a large bullish position (Rs 4,370 crores).
• Simultaneously, Jane Street FPI bought ATM put options and sold ATM call options, creating a bearish options position (Rs 32.15 crores).
• This was triggered by a 3.22% drop in BANKNIFTY at the open, largely due to poor HDFC Bank results.
