California schools could soon close for two Islamic holidays under a bill moving closer to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk.

The legislation formally recognizes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, allows public schools and community colleges to close for both holidays and lets state employees use existing paid holiday credits to observe them.

Supporters call it equal treatment for Muslim families. A conservative Christian group opposing the school provisions argues California law doesn't offer comparable language allowing schools to hold exercises celebrating Christmas, Easter or Good Friday.

The bill overwhelmingly cleared the Assembly 64-1 and now needs Senate approval before the legislative session ends Monday.

A 14 year old girl in Afghanistan is handed over by her family to a 63-year-old local official tied to the Taliban.

It is his fourth marriage. A few days later a wedding video circulates. Other men see her. His honor is wounded. He strangles her.

She never turns 15. Her wedding was her death sentence.

This is being treated in some corners as a shocking one-off.

It isn’t. It is what “pure Islamic rule” looks like when it is actually applied instead of explained away at a Western dinner party.

Child marriage is not a misunderstanding of the texts. It is downstream of a legal and cultural tradition that has long treated puberty as the threshold, fathers as owners of daughters, and a man’s reputation as more valuable than a girl’s life.

The Taliban did not invent this. They are implementing it with fewer pretenses than the governments that came before them.

Since they returned to power, girls have been pushed out of secondary school, confined, and married off younger as families grow poorer and more fearful.

International reporting and Afghan rights groups have documented forced marriages to commanders and officials, girls sold to settle debts, and wives and daughters killed after accusations about honor, virginity, or disobedience.

A new family-law framework under the Taliban has gone further in treating the silence of a “virgin girl” as consent and in recognizing marriages arranged for minors. That is not “cultural color.”

That is a system that turns children into transferable property.

Meanwhile, much of the Western commentariat will perform elaborate concern about “Islamophobia” the moment anyone names the pattern.

The same voices who can detect patriarchy in a sitcom will go quiet when the patriarchy is armed, theocratic, and killing girls.

Feminism that cannot say the words “this ideology does this to women and children” is not a human-rights movement. It is a status game. It will march over language, bathrooms, and campus speakers.

It will not spend equivalent energy on a 14-year-old whose life was ended because a video embarrassed a 63-year-old man with three wives already.

Honor culture is not a synonym for dignity.
In practice it often means: the girl is the object, the man’s ego is the subject, and violence is the correction when the two collide.

Once you accept that a child can be given in marriage to a man old enough to be her grandfather, you have already accepted that her body and future are not hers.

The strangling is the logical next step in a moral universe where her existence is a potential stain on someone else.

None of this requires hating every Muslim. It requires refusing the lie that all value systems produce the same outcomes for girls.

Some societies treat a 14-year-old as a child who belongs in school. Others treat her as a bride, a trophy, and, if the video leaks, a problem to be erased. Pretending those are equally valid “cultures” is not tolerance. It is abandonment of the girl.

If your politics cannot look at this and say, without hedging, that this is monstrous and that the legal-religious order producing it should not be imported, excused, or romanticized , then your politics is not serious about women or children.

It is serious about not being called names.
