And a CO is not legally obligated to refer such cases to the service police either because they do not appear on the list of offences which they must refer out. Why?
That is because there are a whole range of offences such as assault/battery, ABH and many service offences (such as misconduct through alcohol) which can cover domestic abuse cases. A CO can investigate and hear these cases. Why?
Two weeks ago our Director gave evidence to the Armed Forces Bill Committee about the fact that Commanding Officers can still investigate domestic abuse cases in the forces and are not legally obliged to refer them to the service police or prosecutors. https://t.co/Dqle7WXOew
Head of the DSCU quoted here as saying "Defence mirrors society, and unfortunately, people make mistakes.”I’m sure there was more to his interview but it’s an unfortunate quote when you’re talking about rape. https://t.co/1Qst95sNOB
And the statistics they cite in support of their rape conviction data are deeply misleading. “Rape flagging” convictions data inflates the conviction rate and does NOT tell you what the outcomes for rape are at court martial.
Some points of order on this Telegraph piece about the NI Troubles legislation this morning (🧵):
https://t.co/7237S14uaF
1) “the new legislation will scrap the effective immunity for soldiers who served”
The High Court and Court of Appeal in NI have already done that.
Conservative Party/Reform UK proposals to come out of the European Convention on Human Rights are weaponising the fears of elderly veterans and ignoring basic facts. The ECHR has been hugely beneficial to our armed forces. Don’t fall for this. https://t.co/a6apf9Z8D9
Jaysley Beck’s family and friends are jumping out of an aeroplane today over the Lake District, to raise funds for the CMJ. We’re on our way to support them! Links in the attached. Please support if you can! https://t.co/DgN92kow2f
I dared to try 💜
#Breaking4 was about showing the world that we have to push ourselves. This one was for all the young girls and women out there to show that you have to believe in yourself in everything you do.
Faith Kipyegon had the audacity to dream of doing the impossible.
The fastest woman to ever run the mile just ran it faster at #Breaking4, pushing the world closer to the 4-minute barrier.
It’s not a matter of if a woman will break 4, it’s when.
This is brilliant news - the end of a cruel and wholly unnecessary waste of our limited criminal justice system resources to punish women https://t.co/TnRpm18LJB
The blanket ban on any service person speaking publicly about such matters as sexual assault & harassment is unlawful. Congratulations to our brave clients who stood up to the MoD. Huge thanks to @1CrownOfficeRow and@LawforChangeUK https://t.co/7ndfjvg0qC
So many bereaved people find themselves in the position of having to become advocates & campaigners after losing their loved one, to try & ensure no-one has to go through what they have suffered. Here is wonderful Leighann McCready, mum to Jaysley Beck: https://t.co/uUJehzWl3f
