For Star Wars (1977), sound designer Ben Burtt accidentally discovered the iconic blaster sound when he was on a family trip. He recording a high-tension steel cable. Its metallic "twang" already had a strange, energetic quality, which he then edited into the laser effect.
The iconic arrow sequence was actually filmed using real arrows. In other words, the arrows striking the wooden boards were not created with special effects, but carefully staged with skilled archers.
Toshirō Mifune moves his arms to deflect the arrows embedded in the wood, subtly pointing at the direction he intended to move to.
