@hodlonaut Read both pieces with the links open. Wherever you land on the framing, the question underneath feels worth asking: how do Linux, Postgres, OpenSSL live with informal networks without ending up here? Anything replicable, or is Bitcoin its own thing? Curious how others see it
DarkFi App alpha release! Our app platform featuring its first addon: chat.
The world's strongest anon chat. Fully unlinkable. Tor integration. Full free speech.
Cross-platform mobile and laptop for Linux/Android/Mac/Windows.
This is just the start. Next we add more addons like: anon payments, anon DAO, anon trading, ...
We could've taken the easy route which every other project is doing. Most projects do this:
1. Use centralized hosted web frontends for the "apps". Devs then have legal risk and are often targeted by hostile governments. When the website goes down, users are left scrambling to access their funds forced to rely on poor workarounds.
2. An insecure and buggy centralized browser wallet to interact with the apps, often spying on users. Browser plugins are second class citizens, and have poor UI/UX. They rely on centralized web RPC backends rather than native P2P. They are distributed on centralized app stores requiring ecosystem devs to be doxxed and go through Google or Apple's certification.
3. Make separate phone wallets for Android and iPhone lacking smart contract ability, just transacting coins. Often the Android and iPhone apps are different and inconsistent, both in how they look and work. Certain features may be available in one app and not the other. Or they are in different places. Have Android users ever tried to show iPhone users how to scan their contact in Signal?
4. Laptop/desktop is an afterthought or maybe not at all. Productive users are forced to use poor quality web apps. Often if they exist, they are just the webapp repackaged as an app. There is no true P2P light client sync or meaningful platform integration.
5. Zero commandline support or APIs, which means there is no organic community ecosystem or modding. Users are unable to build third party tools. The ecosystem is nonorganic and forced.
DarkFi wanted to create the futurist experience. We did not want to take shortcuts. We realized we needed to be radical in our thinking, and strike out a bold path. People called us crazy but we did it.
What we did is:
1. Ditched the browser completely.
2. Make a single unified app platform.
3. The SAME app for ALL platforms.
4. Extensible and customizable UI and themes by users.
5. Addon infra so apps can be run on all platforms, distributed fully p2p without hosting centralized website frontends.
This is what crypto was supposed to be ☝️
It's still early. We've reached the first milestone: alpha. We released the prealpha 4 months ago, and it was buggy as hell. But anyone comparing now with then can see we've easily done a 10x.
The next release will be another 10x, and so will the next one after that.

All of this means:
* Devs do not host anything. They just write code but the addon is hosted fully P2P and anon.
* Devs do not have to sign up to Google or Apple app stores either for the browser or the phone.
* Nobody is required to host an RPC just so users can access their app.
* There are no more privacy violations from spying either in the addon store, the browser plugin to access the app, the RPC used to communicate on the backend or the dev hosting the frontend. Software runs locally on your device.
* One single consistent experience. Write once, deploy everywhere.
* Full support for third party ecosystem of devs through APIs and CLI.
* App is fully customizable with themes and plugins to suit your desired look and feel.
# Tech
DarkFi has built an extremely solid technical foundation over the last few years. We are now polishing that infra, and giving our main focus to product.
Our tech means we can build the greatest product known in all of crypto. Crypto was meant to change the logic of violence and alter our relations with governments. But instead it got captured by institutions. Why? Because we lacked the real power of anonymity. Anonymity tips the balance in favour of the small guy taking 👏 back 👏 their 👏 freedom 👏.
What tech does DarkFi have?
· ZK infra: compiler, visualization, debugger and VM
· WASM engine and a developer SDK.
· Our own P2P network based off @evoskuil's work. On top of this we made a DAG sync tech called event graph, and have a prototype DHT for sharing static data.
· PoW based blockchain
· Native smart contracts (all anonymous): payments, swaps, issue tokens, world's first anon DAO
· Anon org infra: fully anonymous chat and tasks. Full free speech - no limits.
· drk command line tool to interact with the wallet and call smart contracts.
· P2P network visualizer, blockchain explorer and DAG viewer.
True power. With this we will build the next gen of anon tools. As Satoshi said, we will expand the space of freedom outwards, and claim a decisive victory using crypto.
Stage 1: complete ✅
Activate stage 2: ship product and iterate.
# UI/UX
Everyone has got it wrong. Flat minimal UI/UX is ugly and bland. Software should look good. Software should have SOVL.
Scifi promised us the future. We got slop instead. Remember skins and themes? Bring that back. Software should look & feel cool.
We need a fresh start. We decided there will be one app for all platforms. A seamless experience across mobile and laptop.
So we coded our own UI toolkit by hand. Full control the way we want. It is hardware accelerated. It is async parallelized.
We can even live edit the UI while it's running. The entire app is a tree of nodes and properties, which can be edited using a dev network protocol. Editing these properties updates the app realtime to display changes.
This means users can fully customize the UI. We will have themes and skins to do this.
The UI has fractional scaling which is realtime - no restart required. This is supported in the app now.
Mozilla changed the web forever because it was more than a browser. It was a generic UI toolkit called XUL. Mozilla could be fully customized or even used to make entirely new apps like Thunderbird. This is our vision.
DarkFi's app will be a unified seamless cross-platform app. Devs will distribute software as addons over anonymous p2p.
We aim for a complete out of the box experience too. But users can customize everything. Full power.
And if you don't like UI - then our CLI experience will be first class too.
# Next Release
The next release will focus on fixing bugs, performance tweaks and making the software stable. It will be the beta release.
We will improve initial sync on load. You open the app and it will sync very quickly.
Our next big feature will be private DMs and secret channels.
We also plan a settings manager like "about:config" in web browsers and a node explorer to visualize the p2p network.
Let there be dark.
