Prime Minister Carney’s address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg rested on several foundational errors.
The claim that freedom was won “thanks to the heroism of the European resistance” is historically false. Western Europe was liberated by the armed forces of the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. The subsequent emancipation of the Soviet empire was the product of the American strategy of containment. Canada’s role was particularly notable: a volunteer force from a country that had never been attacked or threatened by the Axis powers.
The European institutions have succeeded in reducing internal economic barriers and managing inter-state cooperation. As an economic administration, however, they have not been a success at all. In 2008 the GDP of Europe and the United States were roughly equal; the United States now stands at 140 percent of the EU’s. Much of this relative decline is attributable to the prolonged suppression of fossil fuels—an agenda Carney himself promoted for years.
Carney also omitted the decisive commercial reality: Canada sends roughly 70 percent of its exports to the United States (98% of which is unaffected by the recent tariffs) and only 6 percent to Europe. The United States accounts for half of the Canadian economy; Canada accounts for three percent of theirs. These proportions are not altered by elaborate metaphors about the transplantation of trees between Vimy and Milliken.
Until Canada recovers the relative prosperity it enjoyed with the United States a decade ago, there is little strategic sense in the prime minister travelling to the Rhine to deliver a wistful reflection on the failure of Canada and Europe to produce a superior political ethos while remaining economically competitive.
@fordnation Thank you Mr. Ford, please continue leading this initiative in your role as Chair of the Council and Premier of Ontario. It's comforting to know the Premiers are stepping up in a positive manner in the absence of federal capability.
@brianlilley Brian, I have been following you for years because you're one of the few journalists who actually do their job. Keep on asking the uncomfortable questions, keep on reporting what others don't. Keep on following the facts and doing a critical analysis of them.
@neiltyson I learned it in elementary school and has been in my brain ever since in its rounded form as 3.141516. The school system globally has failed us so miserably that I suspect most people can't relate to this. Thanks Neil for posting such a provocative piece of data
@DrJacobsRad@brianlilley@Royal_College Just completed it. Thanks for making us aware of such disturbing direction the practice of medicine could take. This needs to stop
@piersmorgan Who cares, what matters is good football for us to enjoy. Regardless of anything, let's enjoy together their victories for the sport we enjoy
@BonnieCrombie@fordnation The former liberal regime created the education system we have today. We haven't had neither time or political will to recover from that yet.
@BonnieCrombie@ShamjiAdil The former liberal regime devastated our health system. Created a bureaucracy like none. Leave it to the liberals to make it worse
@ThinkingManShow Just saw your latest show. Great, looking forward to the deeper dive in. Please continue with your "logical" analysis of this negotiating process. Thanks
@BonnieCrombie@TorontoStar Agree, but please stop antagonizing the Provincial government. And pick y speed on some.issues, 15 years planning the waterfront development is questionable
@jdavidson2017 @brianlilley I'm a proud Canadian, our passport stranded out now looks like material to laugh about. Very sad, a reflection of how our leaders feel about who we are
@jessjoyce@fordnation The lion share of the provincial budget goes to these two portfolios. This government has outspent any other government in education and healthcare.
@brianlilley The sad part is the likely they will get away with most of their requirements as they have always done. As a nation we don't have the political will to stand up to them. You're attacked if you try. We need an overhaul of the social contract is our Country
@AnneVince13 @brianlilley Ford is acting on the mandate he got, he's also fight for the taxpayers. Unfortunately we're so accustomed to solving problems by spending that standing up to increases is problematic.
