In the midst of all this troubling political news, I did want to share that my FIRST EVER peer-reviewed journal article has now been published. So I can finally call myself a ✨published✨scholar. 🙌🏾🙏🏾👏🏾💗.
Spoken to plenty of Latino Trump voters, and many basically said: "The economy sucked for me under Biden. Covid shutdowns, inflation, housing costs going up. Entonces—he's fired. Time for something new." Sometimes it's not more deep than that.
Carville has a line about this...
Final notes from my reporting in Latino communities during the election:
80% of Latinos are working class. Their experience of the economy the past four years—Covid shutdowns, inflation, gas prices, housing costs—was rough. That puts the incumbent Dems at a disadvantage. 🧵1/9
Too many people think "Latinos" are a monolith. They disregard religion (more protestants vote Republican than Catholics), language (more Spanish-dominant speakers prefer the Democratic Party than English-dominant ones), country (Cubans), racial markers, & Indigenous identity.
@MinistroCiencia nah. La realidad es que hay que ser democrático y abogar por la estadidad... porque aparentemente es lo que la mayoría en PR quiere.
A mi no me gusta la idea de la estadidad, pero si queremos una democracia, hay que respetar los deseos de los votantes.
My brother couldn’t get a passport under Trump. He was born here. In Texas.
They told him he had to submit school and medical records from when he was a kid to get one. We lived in poverty and couldn’t afford doctors so there are no medical records.
Anyways…yay! 🤷🏽♀️
There is a lot of work to do. We, as citizens, and the Democratic leadership need to rethink and reorganize.
"How could we have prevented this from happening?"
We have to listen more and develop new strategies for communicating and organizing.
