Independence Day, 2022: Rizal, Del Pilar, Lopez Jaena and company through their writings fought for the independence of mind that’s needed to achieve Philippine Independence
The Catholic churches are crammed to the rafters every Sunday with many of the same worshippers who lie, steal, cheat and murder from Monday to Saturday. These weekday atheists and many others ignored the Church plea for them to make a moral choice last May 9.
School shootings are an epidemic in the US not only because there are 120 guns per 100 US people. It is also because the movies, TV programs, music and other products of the US culture industry idealize violence and guns as the answer to every problem whether real or imagined.
Rizal said that there are no tyrants where there are no slaves. The worst form of slavery is not of the body but of the mind—and of that these isles of forgetfulness have plenty, hence the reality and constant threat of tyranny.
“The evil that is in the world comes of ignorance...the most incorrigible vice of all is the ignorance that fancies it knows everything and claims for itself the right to kill.”—Nobel Prize Laureate Albert Camus.
We should be asking what is profoundly wrong with a culture in which far too many people are willing to do anything, even the most evil deeds, for money, in total disregard of both truth and the country’s future. Poverty and need alone cannot account for it.

Mr. Duterte himself bragged that the shutdown of ABS-CBN was his doing, which means that the House Franchises Committee did what he wants. The same committee also ignored 75 percent of the people’s favoring the renewal of the network’s franchise.
Rather than demolishing the oligarchy, the shutdown of ABS-CBN is an assault on the Republic, whose fundamentals are the independence of the executive , legislative and judicial branches and representative gov’t’s heeding the people’s sentiments
