🚨#BREAKING: Outrage is erupting after a 22-year-old who runs into BURNING BUILDINGS as a volunteer firefighter was told he isn't qualified to be a paid firefighter...
...because he was HOMESCHOOLED.
Then the city changed the job posting to cover it up.
His name is Andrew Coates. He's 22 years old, in Nebraska.
Right now, today, he runs into burning buildings as a volunteer firefighter for Cedar Bluffs Fire. He is a state-licensed EMT.
He is doing the job. For free.
All he wanted was to get PAID to do it. In his words: "Make a career out of it would be the goal. To get paid to do what you love."
So he applied to the Fremont Fire Department.
And in April, the city rejected him. Why?
Because his high school diploma says he was homeschooled.
That's it. That's the whole disqualification.
Not his EMT license.
Not his fitness.
Not his record.
Not his experience pulling people out of fires ALREADY!!
...how he was educated.
The job posting he applied to said "graduation from high school."
That's all it said.
He graduated high school.
He has a diploma.
And AFTER they rejected him, the city went back and added the word "accredited" to the job description.
His own fire chief, the man who has watched Andrew work, showed up to defend him:
"I feel the city of Fremont is really missing out here, and in my mind, because of his homeschooling, you guys are discriminating against him."
Over THIRTY homeschool families showed up to stand behind this kid.
And the Civil Service Commission? They said it isn't their job to touch city policy.
Homeschoolers are literally a generation of kids who read ABOVE grade level, who work with their HANDS, who volunteer in their communities, who show up for their neighbors.
And this young man is the proof.
At 22, he's a certified EMT and a volunteer firefighter, while plenty of his peers are on a couch.
When your house is on fire at 3 a.m., I promise you will not ask the man dragging your children out where he went to high school.
You will not ask if his diploma was accredited.
You will thank GOD he came.
Andrew isn't even fighting for himself anymore. His words:
"I think now it's turned into we want to make sure that every homeschooler has an equal opportunity."
That's a better man than the policy that rejected him.
Fremont, you have a licensed EMT and an active firefighter begging to serve your city. And you turned him down over paperwork, then rewrote the paperwork to cover it.
Fix this.
Hire him!!!!!!!
🚨 Alert: The following Kentucky school districts have either increased or are attempting to increase property taxes.
We are still early in property tax increase season. If your school district isn't on this list, keep an eye on them.
Passed:
* Oldham County Schools
* Boone County Schools
* Elizabethtown Independent
* Bullitt County Public Schools
* Harlan County Schools
* Jessamine County
Proposed/Advertised Increase:
* Fayette County Public Schools
* Campbell County Schools
* Bellevue Independent
* Fort Thomas Independent
* Ludlow Independent
* Graves County Schools
* Hardin County Schools
* McCracken County Schools
* Perry County Schools
* Caldwell County Schools
* Erlanger-Elsmere Independent
* Jefferson County Public Schools (proposed budget assumed a 4% increase)
* Powell County Schools (proposed budget assumed a 4% increase)
Chances are, if you live in one of these districts, you may have heard that your taxes either dropped or stayed the same and that they didn't increase.
Either you were lied to, or the district is specifically using language that is meant to confuse the issue by hiding increases behind lower tax rates.
How do they do this?
It comes down to how property taxes are levied and how rates are set every year.
The PVA assesses property values, and those values can change from year to year. However, Kentucky does not automatically increase your property tax bill simply because your property's assessed value increased. Instead, the taxing district has to calculate a new tax rate based on the new property values in its district.
That creates something called the compensating rate.
The compensating rate is the tax rate that allows a taxing district to collect approximately the same amount of revenue from property that existed in the previous year, excluding revenue from new property.
Because property values generally increase over time, the compensating rate is often lower than the previous year's tax rate.
A district can then vote to keep the same rate or choose a lower rate than the previous year's rate, while still increasing revenue.
The PVA does NOT increase your taxes. The taxing district sets the tax rate.
The taxing district makes the decision about how much revenue it wants to collect.
Here's an easy example:
If you own property worth $100 and the tax rate is $0.50 per $100, you pay $0.50 in tax.
If the PVA increases the assessed value of your property to $200, the compensating rate would be approximately $0.25 per $100 to keep the tax bill on that same property the same at $0.50.
But if the district sets the new rate at $0.30 per $100, that's technically a lower tax rate.
However, your tax bill would now be $0.60 on the same property.
That's a $0.10 increase, or a 20% increase in the tax bill even though the tax rate dropped.
Under Kentucky's current rules, a rate that produces more than 4% in revenue over the compensating rate is subject to the recall process.
That's why you will see many districts choosing rates that are lower than the previous year's rate while still increasing revenue 4%.
The fact that this system is so confusing is part of how districts can claim they lowered tax rates or kept them the same when, in reality, the average tax bill on existing property can still increase.
They are defining a tax increase or decrease based on the tax rate, while most people define it by the size of the check they have to write.
The important distinction is this:
The PVA determines the assessed value. The taxing district determines the tax rate.
A taxing district can choose the compensating rate—or a rate below it—and that can reduce the amount of property tax collected from existing property, regardless of how much the PVA increased property values.
I may have missed some school districts. Feel free to add yours in the comments if I missed it.

Since Flock loves to track our locations, it only seems fair that we know theirs.

Flock went to great lengths to keep that address hidden.
That probably means it should be public info.
