STANDARD GROUP CONDEMNS ABDUCTION OF ITS SENIOR EDITOR, DEMANDS HIS IMMEDIATE AND SAFE RELEASE

The Standard Group PLC confirms that shortly before 9:20pm this evening, our Associate Editor, Alex Kiprotich, was abducted along the Gilgil–Nakuru road while travelling to Nakuru. We do not know where he is as we issue this statement.

This is the second time in as many months that Mr Kiprotich has been targeted. On 27 June 2026, armed men in a Toyota Probox a vehicle model repeatedly linked to enforced disappearances of government critics in Kenya, tried to seize him from his car as he drove to work in Nakuru. He got away by locking his doors and driving off. That attempt came days after President William Ruto publicly criticised this Group over its coverage, and our own investigations traced the vehicle to the National Police Service's Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau. No one has ever been held to account for it.

Tonight, that threat has been carried out.
We do not believe this is a coincidence. Mr Kiprotich has been at the forefront of our editorial output, including reporting that has scrutinised the conduct of the State, and tonight's abduction bears all the hallmarks of a targeted attack on a journalist for doing his job.

We believe it may be linked to elements within the State seeking to intimidate this Group into silence. If that is confirmed, this is not simply a crime against one man. It is an assault on the Constitution of Kenya, on the freedoms of expression and of the media guaranteed under Articles 33 and 34, and on the right of every Kenyan to independent information.

We say this plainly and without equivocation: the Standard Group holds the State responsible for Alex Kiprotich's safety and his life, and for anything that happens to him while he remains missing. Protecting the life and liberty of every citizen is the State's first duty, not an afterthought, and Mr Kiprotich's safety now rests entirely in its hands.

We are demanding:
1. The immediate, safe and unconditional release of Alex Kiprotich.

2. A prompt, transparent and independent investigation into his abduction, and into why no one has ever answered for the attempt of June 27, 2026.

3. Real, visible guarantees that journalists in Kenya will be protected, in keeping with commitments the President has already made publicly and has so far failed to honour.

We are calling on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, the Law Society of Kenya, the Media Council of Kenya, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and everyone who values a free press in this country, to demand answers alongside us until Mr Kiprotich is found safe.

We will keep the public informed as we learn more, and we will not let this matter quietly fade from view.

Many otherwise learned and prominent Kenyans have advanced LOGICAL FALLACIES and argue that Luo Nyanza was not MARGINALIZED for 45 years under Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki, specifically, because:

[a] Luo Nyanza has Kisumu Airport while Turkana has no airport.

[b] Luo Nyanza counties have been receiving funds after the introduction of devolution in 2013.

Firstly, no one has ever claimed that only Luo Nyanza was marginalized. There are many nationalities and areas which were marginalized under Kenyatta, Moi and Kibaki. When we point out the issue of marginalization, it’s because it was images of Homa Bay county which were being used to abuse Luos and Homa Bay people. No one published images of Turkana or Kilifi to abuse their residents. Nor are we arguing that governors of Luo Nyanza are not corrupt and shouldn’t be accountable for the public funds they have misappropriated.

Some of us have maintained that ALL corrupt public officials should be charged and punished. ALL at both levels of government and in ALL counties and offices. Some of us have been demanding accountability from everyone without resorting to fallacies, the construction of straw men and ethnocentric insensitivities.

Secondly, the issue was not to compare levels of marginalization in Kenya. We were not doing a comparative analysis. And even if we were, it’s illogical for one to argue, by way of analogy, that there was no apartheid, systemic racism and marginalization of South African Blacks because South Africa is infrastructurally more developed than other parts of Africa. Similarly, it is fallacious to argue that slavery didn’t exist or afflict African Americans because one of the biggest and modern airports is in Atlanta which is considered an African American city in a predominantly African American state. There are numerous examples we could give.

Thirdly, for the 45 years when deliberate systematic marginalization was imposed on Luo Nyanza, Luos and other communities which were marginalized were paying taxes just like other Kenyans; but their taxes were being used to develop Nairobi, Central Province and parts of the Rift Valley. After devolution was introduced, those areas which were being developed for 45 years also started receiving devolution funds just like the areas which had been marginalized. Consequently, even without considering corruption, one cannot argue that those two sets of regions would be at the same level in terms of economic development.

Fourthly, to argue that governors in Mount Kenya, Nairobi, Mombasa, Rift Valley and other areas are less corrupt or more accountable than governors of Luo Nyanza is to engage in a fool’s errand. I believe ALL governors in Kenya are irredeemably corrupt. Of course, they are not at the same level.

However, no one can convince me that the many billionaires in the Mount Kenya region, almost all of them former government officials who used to earn less than SH’s 200K per month, got their wealth due to some mythical superior entrepreneurship and frugality.

Similarly, you are free to engage a pig in a debate about how Anne Waiguru, Ferdinand Waititu, Susan Kihika, Johnson Sakaja, Mike Sonko, Ali Hassan Joho, Mwangaza, Wa-Iria or Lusaka are less corrupt and more accountable than Gladys Wanga.

Resorting to red herrings isn’t a useful exercise. Cheap ethnocentric stigmatization, mockery and scapegoating isn’t accountability. Neither is challenging insensitive attacks on Luos a defence of corruption.

We will transform Kenya only by honestly acknowledging historical and systemic policies and failures and attempting to come up with pragmatic and sound solutions to intractable problems. No short cuts. No red herrings. No excuses. No ethnocentric justifications.

We will not cower. We will never surrender.

Telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
