With 3 more women killed by men in the last 24 hours, it’s a good time to remind everyone that more women have been killed by male violence since 2020 than all Australians killed by shark attacks, terrorism and one punch attacks combined in the last 25 years.
A shark killed one man this week.
Men killed three Australian women - YESTERDAY!
Only one of these scenarios will receive widespread attention - and no, it won't be the fact that three women are dead at the hands of men known to them in one day.
* A 70-year-old woman's body was found in a home at Mole River in NSW when police responded to an act of domestic violence yesterday, A 37-year-old male is in custody.
* A 23-year-old woman was stabbed to death in a home at Kooringal, NSW, yesterday.
* A 90-year-old woman was stabbed to death at Bondi Beach, NSW, yesterday.
* A Northern Territory woman was taken to hospital in critical condition yesterday and a man known to her is in custody.
* Early this week a woman died after an assault at Palmerston, NT. Her partner was charged with assault. An autopsy will determine if he is charged over her murder.
There's always been a huge disparity in how the media, politicians, policy-makers and our community responds to shark attacks compared to femicide.
We've seen hundreds of headlines published about the shark attack in Perth this past week but there's been very few published on the deaths of women this week.
I have documented the violent deaths of 52 women this year. Not once has a 'catch and kill' order been issued within hours of a woman's death at the hands of a man. No I am not suggesting femicide perpetrators be killed, but I am using this as an example of how hard authorities will go when a shark kills a person.
But it shows how authorities see the existence of wild animals as an urgent threat to public safety that require immediate preventative interventions.
Beaches are closed. Nets are put in place. Wild animals are tracked. Warnings are issued.
Political leaders come with flowers and sympathy.
When women are killed, we're asked 'what did she do to deserve it', the perpetrators score a 'good bloke narrative', political leaders have no words of condolence and calls for increased funding, support services and better legal responses fall on deaf ears.
Where there is a policy response, it always re-active and far too minimal.
We need strong investment in systemic prevention targeting perpetrators and sustained cultural and structural responses so we shift the drivers that underpin male violence against women in our country.

@RonniSalt The hairspray in the tall black can was the only way to go for extreme elevation. It’s a wonder I have any hair left after backcombing my fringe so ferociously every day to make it stand on end.
@RonniSalt One of the gang of 10 or so girls I used to go out with in the early 90s showed her daughter a photo of us dolled up for a night on the town. Daughter asked why we were all wearing wigs.

I'm absolutely rolling that he did a week's worth of his wife's chores, was too tired to really enjoy sex, and still doesn't understand why he has a dead bedroom.
this man, for one weekend, behaved the same way an average wife would behave if there was company coming into town. all of this is stuff his wife would have done, but he took it on.
his wife was like, "wow that was incredibly helpful, my weekend wasn't stressful, and having sex sounds really appealing!"
his response: THE LEVEL OF EFFORT I GAVE WAS INSANE AND UNSUSTAINABLE. I COULD NOT LIVE MY LIFE LIKE THIS.
❤️SHE MATTERS: THE UNNAMED WOMAN❤️
Victoria and Queensland have the highest rates of femicides in Australia - with both states on 12 women lost to violence each.
In Victoria, the latest victim is a 41-year-old woman who required NDIS supports.
George Paraskevas allegedly murdered the woman at her home in Bacchus Marsh on August 26. He was charged some days later and is now on remand.
The as-yet unnamed woman is the 47th of 49 Australian women killed this year. Last year we lost 79 women to violence - the year before 106 women were killed.
It is understood the woman required a carer and Paraskevas was that person. It is not known if he is related to the victim but there's no doubt she was vulnerable.
Women with disability are at higher risk of violence by their family members and/or their carers than other women.
Also this past week, an 85-year-old woman was murdered in Tasmania, allegedly by her 55-year-old son who was her full-time carer.
Often these victims are forgotten by anti-violence activists and media outlets. They are most likely to be the victims you never hear about but their lives matter as much as anyone else's.
THIS UNNAMED WOMAN MATTERS❤️

❤️ABOUT THE COUNT❤️
I document all Australian women & children lost to murder, manslaughter, neglect and other unlawful acts regardless of perpetrator gender or relationship to the victim. This means not all women and children killed are lost to domestic violence. They are also killed by people known to them (ie friends) or by strangers. My work includes Australians killed overseas. Every death is documented at https://t.co/DW9BTHwqhk (link in bio).
A 16-year-old girl is in a coma with 16 fractures to her eye sockets, cheek bones and jaw after a teenage boy allegedly hit her in the back of the head with a piece of wood at Foster in NSW on the weekend.
Her father has confirmed her injuries and the incident are significantly more serious than NSW Police has said.
The girl was celebrating with friends when a 17-year-old teenage boy allegedly threw a piece of wood at her head.
She was knocked out and rushed to hospital where she remains in the ICU.
The teenager has been released on bail and will attend court next month.
Another week in which multiple women are murdered and there's been no acknowledgement from our Prime Minister. Fours days. Three women. All killed by men known to them!
