as much as i mostly agree with you, (see: my other post linking to a tweet that agrees with you), i gotta say, i've told this story many times and none of my male friends have ever shared my experience of someone saying... "ummm... are you talking about ew-ler?"
"Mansplaining" is an unhelpful term born from a clash of communication styles.
People who use the label often push the narrative that men are intentionally patronising towards women. (Psst...some are...don't be that guy!)
But such a hard conclusion also disregards how men cultivate relationships - which can be very different to women.
Male conversation is often dominated with knowledge exchange and recommendations about things ("you should try this" "have you done that?").
And it often lacks talking about emotions and people ("have you heard about..." "that must have felt...").
Even a quick twitter poll shows this. 93% of men say the content of their conversations with same sex friends is best categorised as "knowledge" vs "feelings". For women? 42% - less than half.
Forgetting about whether that's "right" or "wrong" - the point is that the types of conversations men have to become closer to one another are often different to those women have.
So what happens when a man, in an effort to become closer to women, applies the same communication style they use to build relationships with other men? You guessed it: "Stop mansplaining".
It's a failure of cross-sex mind reading, perhaps. Poor social skills and emotional intelligence on behalf of the man.
But the irony is, assuming the motive is to be patronising, rather than relationship-building, is also potentially a failure of cross-sex mind reading!
Final thought - people who are patronising are rarely patronising to just one sex. They're patronising to everyone. Hence, in my house, we call it "And(rew)splaining" ;)
i sometimes wish i were male... but i don't think i much wish to be a more masculine woman. if anything, i wish i enjoyed makeup and fashion and other typically feminine things more
the one exception is that i'm very jealous of my guy friends who never work out and can do long backpacking trips or just decide to pick up kiteboarding bc testosterone. maybe i'd want a bit more testosterone just to be a better adventure girlie
this is worth a read
when i describe myself as "greedy", ever hungry for more even though i already lead such a lovely life, it’s because i know lives and loves and minds such as this exist
and i can't help but want it
my guy friend went through a tough breakup a couple of weeks ago, and (as i eventually learned,) today was his now-ex-girlfriend's birthday
this is how he asked for support
i really wish i wasn't so hard on latte art
i deeply want to be the kind of whimsical girlie who is easily delighted by a tidy heart adorning my caffeine
it's just hard to be impressed by a form that is limited to only hearts, leaves, & cobwebs of near identical personalities
@202accepted i have milwaukee m12 bc i liked the idea of being a milwaukee girlie but really i have the personality of a makita person and actually ryobi would've treated me just fine
me: what are some POPOS or coffee shops or other places to work from 5-7pm on a tuesday near the orpheum theater in sf?
claude: explains that the POPOS are closed and gives 4 meh options while totally forgetting about the library main branch (open til 8pm)
clearly the correct response to "would you still love me if i was a worm?" is "which worm?"
earthworms, roundworms, and flatworms are three different phyla... meaning they're as different from each other as we are from a garden snail or sea coral...
today's pedantry brought to you by me finally learning taxonomy for the first time
i found a really good stick. but i chewed it too hard. and it broke in half. which was disappointing until i realized. now i have two sticks. today has been. an emotional roller coaster
