"Civic education should not be about speaking for people, it should be about empowering people to speak for themselves."
A powerful reflection from the #MaskaniKwale conversation on Youth and Political Participation.
When citizens understand their rights, responsibilities, and the governance processes that shape their lives, they move beyond assumptions and become active participants in building accountable leadership.

A powerful reflection from the #MaskaniKwale conversation:
Young people are not absent from politics because they lack interest, they are often locked out by systemic barriers.
Participants identified the high cost of politics, limited access to campaign resources, lack of economic empowerment, the expectation of having a political godfather or endorsement from a major party, and the perception that young candidates are not ready to lead, even when they are qualified.
If we want meaningful youth representation, we must dismantle these barriers and create a political environment where leadership is determined by ideas, integrity, competence, and service, not money, patronage, or age.

Today marks the last day of the 3-day #MaskaniKwale training, culminating in a Maskani Conversation on Youth and Political Participation.
The youth of Kwale are coming together to reflect on their role beyond elections, discuss the governance and development issues shaping their future, and explore practical ways to strengthen accountability, public participation, and inclusive leadership.
The message is clear, democracy thrives when young people are informed, engaged, and empowered to shape the decisions that affect their communities.
